hallway advice please moving the showing door towards the stairs .

please can anyone advice me how I would like to move the door by the landing to the stairs area further down.

I can do with a longer hallway.

I don't think you have enough space from the lower landing.

I am thinking of extending the upper landing to meet the wall oppposite

and hence where the idea of changing stairs to accomodate this change

I seriously wanted to move this door as it is bathroom and always very not nice odour always whenever the door is opened.

please any suggestion is welcome.

I think you did a splendid job here. The dark and white woodwork is very well handled, and I like the color of the wallpaper and the stair runner. Tight spaces can be tough to manage, but you’ve done a fine job, it looks very inviting. I was particularly interested in the last photo; I have almost the exact setup in my own home, with a facing wall as you come down the stairs, and a shelf with various items on display (mine is quite the dust-catcher, I must admit). The space has always been a little dark, so I am planning to cut out an interior window, centered on the wall above the shelf, and mount a stained glass panel there. Since our guest room above it is bathed in bright southern sunlight, I am expecting a happy result. I just have to find the right window… I like the practical use you are getting from the space under the stairs, too. A perfect little spot to sit for a moment. Great job!

Thank you, yes you're correct the top windows run parallel with the hallway and are almost impossible to reach to clean!! So please don't look too closely at the photo ;-). I suppose before going down the designer route right now i'm just trying to determine whether firstly just flipping 180 degrees would work, and look good as this is obviously the cheapest option. Secondly whether blocking in our existing porch space would offer any alternative layouts. if not then i can scrap the idea in my head and move on as anything more than single storey is unlikely to be affordable at the moment. By the way, did u find the first staircase image on Houzz? It's gorgeous and I'd like to see the other pictures associated with the house

Thanks so much to you all for taking the time to make comments. It seems unanimous that we should keep the panelling! I’m leaning toward painting it (partly because I think it’ll be less work than stripping it!) and I really like some of the colour suggestions, I’ll order some paint samples! My picture shows the brightest part of the hallway and makes the panelling look paler than it is near the stairs, the panelling is actually all dark like at the back of the photo. Away from the door the hallway is quite dark so I’m not sure whether dark colours will be too much, I’ll see what I think when the samples arrive.

You definately have the drop for a more statement shade in the staircase. An option would be a shade that allows light upwards as well as down, but please avoid a chandelier! I think the fashion for chandeliers has past and they are a bit cold in their feel and not welcoming cor a hall. Something with fabric texture could work well, or one of those petal shades.

if you extend the upper landing to meet the wall opposite then you don't have enough space for the stairs to go from the lower landing to the extended upper landing.

what you may be able to do is to have another door on the upper landing if there is enough space. Maybe you can consider a sliding door.

Hi, You could alter the mid landing to have a kite in each corner and a step in the middle, \I/ something like that. Then you would loose three steps from the upper flight meaning you can move the door three steps further over. Its a lot of work though just to move a door and you would still have smells from the bathroom. Could the bathroom extract fan be upgraded to improve on the ventilation?
