BORA the German Cooktop Extractor Company will again be exhibiting at Grand Designs Live 2019.

It’s from October 9th-13th at Birmingham NEC.

For your new project / refurb you might not have thought about extraction, but it’s very important to consider!!! More & more people are going for open plan living….. where you don’t want your living area smelling of the food you cook, you don’t want kitchen cabinets caked in grease etc.

If you were to put the utility door in the hall which might be more practical for washing, you could do something like this? Rather than the island have the peninsula as shown in your whole ground floor layout. Personally speaking I'd also go for an integrated FF as it's a much cleaner and streamlined look and I think fewer appliances on show in a living space the better. I'd have a banquette seat for the dining table so you can have it against the wall. An L shaped might work well. I'd try the sofas opposite each other to create a bit more space although that may not work depending on how many people in your family watching tv! I think you'd need to bring in the one opposite the tv a little to be able to see the tv anyway unless it's a massive tv! Although if the dining table is pushed back into that corner as suggested it does leave room for a corner sofa with perhaps a low back chair opposite it in front of the tv.

Island extractor - flush to ceiling vs downdraft?

Hi there. Looking for some related advice. We''re also ordering a new kitchen and are trying to decide on an extractor. The only issue is that the ceiling is about 3.25-3.5m high so everyone keeps telling us to have a bulkhead over the island as a ceiling mounted extractor will be inefficient otherwise (we're told a height of more than 1.5m above the hob is the maximum; ours will be about 2.2m...). We really don't want anything hanging from the ceiling over the kitchen island as it is in an open space and will ruin the whole open plan concept. Do you know of any flush ceiling mounted extractors with motors which are strong enough to work at that height? Currently looking at Falmec, Sirius and Frecan but would love to hear your suggestions. Thanks in advance!

There is a calculation for how much extraction you need to keep grease and smells out of the air and out of your furniture. Basically you need to filter the total volume of air in the room 10 times per hour which for your room means extracting 1300 square meters per hour. Most ceiling extractors extract 700square meters per hour- also their efficacy is reduced when the builder insists on putting in a vent that is too small (almost always they put in 12cm instead of 15cm so this is 50% smaller). The efficacy is also reduced if the extraction pipe is long or has bends in it. So basically to effectively extract in a large room you either need three overhead or extractors or one downdraft one. I get that on the face of it there seems to be a cost disparity but if you want clean air this is what you have to do.

my thinking was the table could be pushed flush with the island the majority of the time leaving a gap to walk past of approx 140cm. Thats with a 110cm gap between island and units, 90cm island and 90cm table. Or if you rotate the table and have it pushed with one end against the island, a 120cm table would sit 4 and leave 110cm to pass which is the same as the gap between island and units. If it was an extending table it can be rotated 90 degrees on the rare occasion more seating is required. Yes, it would mean it would probably close off that side of the room but if it's not a daily occurance? Some compromises will have to be made if you really want to fit everything in that space unfortunately.
