Classic handles? Or a minimalistic handleless alternative?

Many have grown accustomed to classic details, such as brass, steel or oak handles. However, in recent years, the introduction of handleless collections has provided a contemporary twist to interior design - leaning towards a minimalistic perspective.

The sleek finish of handleless kitchen cabinets is desirable for many and as designers continue to incorporate them into their designs, they've continued to grow in popularity. Yet, classic handles when chosen well, can provide strong focal points in the kitchen.

So, let's put the question to you:

Classic steel handles?

Smooth handleless alternative?

I have voted for classic handles because fundamentally, look should follow function, and the one thing that the handle provides is an affordance of sorts. Sleek and minimalist is all very good, until you need to open an invisible (perfectly flush) door that doesn't have any indication of how it should be done... Having said that, is is possible to design a minimalist alternative so the way to open things is either fairly obvious or at least easy to work out, and if the house doesn't get too many guests or people working in it, the family members will usually learn things fairly quickly.

Smooth handleless cabinets look great in modern kitchens. However, cabinets with handles are a lot more practical and in today's day and age, you can pretty much buy any type/style of cabinet handles you like! From classy to downright funky!

It's a tough one! It all depends on the aesthetic you are trying to create. For a flat panel kitchen I think it looks more simple to go for a handless design, and have cut outs in the cabinet doors instead, or push to open doors. Alternatively, for a Shaker style kitchen, I would recommend long pull bars, as I personally think Shaker furniture looks a little strange with out some kind of handle. I love both, and they each have their good points and are suited to different settings. As a designer, though, I often prefer the Shaker designs - I don't know why, but they often seem to provide a bit more scope for creativity! Caldicot Kitchens

Thanks so much! I took a look at the page but couldn’t quite figure it out..so the cupboards on the wall are standard wall cupboards (I guess 60cm deep?). The banquet is then built out below that? So there is 60cm of hollow space behind the seat under the wall cupboards? Sorry if I’m asking a silly question! We’ve been looking at building a stud wall to hide some stuff but this could work much better, just feel that the hollow space could possibly be put to use to store something!

Thanks tamp75. It turns out the painter is only doing a white mist coat today & is returning later in the week so I have time to buy even more testers. LOL. He said I can paint the testers on the walls in the extension which should help as it is west facing whereas the playroom that I tested them on is east facing. We were originally going to go with Cornforth White kitchen cabinets but DIY's standard light grey was a lovely colour (&,cheaper!) so we went with that. I think if we'd gone with Cornforth White the decision making on the wall colour would have been easier!!
