Are you working on a garden project?
Comments (10)If you want to replace your ash tree with something that won't grow too large you could try a white-beam, it's a deciduous tree, will grow to around 20 feet high and has pretty leaves that are a silvery colour underneath. Trees like silver birch can be great in narrow gardens as they don't cast too big a shadow. We have a sout&west facing garden but it was always in the shade because of a huge ash and a very wide yew tree... They've both gone now the whit beam made an excellent replacement. Be careful with lelandii, notoriously difficult for you, or your neighbours to grow anything in its shade or beneath it as it sucks up all the moisture from the ground, it can cause heated disagreements. It will require a lot of maintenance to control it but also make your own garden feel very narrow, which may not be a problem of you have an unusually large garden for a new build. How about topping a fence with trellis and growing some climbing shrubs, a much softer look, perhaps some scented things like honeysuckle or roses, and with the benefit of being able to plant underneath. If you like the sculptured look grasses in a raised bed look great, there is such a variety and they are pretty low maintenance. If you choose to have a sandpit for your child/ren remember it will need a cover or all the cats in the neighbourhood will claim it! A seating area that you can get to without walking on grass is essential or you won't use it as much as you could if it's been wet weather, be really aware of where the sun falls in your garden, don't have that area too near the house if your garden faces North/east or you'll miss out most of the year. There is something to be said for not doing too much to a garden before you've spent a whole year there to see just how much sun it gets, depends how keen you are to get on with it though!...See MoreWhat colour would you paint this house?
Comments (152)Hi Nicky, my apologies I have only just seen your message. We went for cornforth white Farrow and Ball (which it definitely not white). The shutters are not back open yet but some of them will need to go back on because the large expanses of grey look very grey. The bits next to the white look less austere. The new white garage door with windows has made a big difference. I'd be careful with a very pale grey because if your windows are anything like mine you'll find that they are not actually that white after all.......See MoreWhat floor plan would work best for our guest bedroom
Comments (12)Wow- so overwhelmed by the replies and all of the help, couldn't appreciate it any more. Emily- thank you so much for your post. It's currently pushed against a wall which works fine but would prefer it to have access either side for a couple if possible :) Ace your space- I really like the layout that way, there is a radiator under the window (i should have said) so would need moving which think may be a bigger job. It's something i would consider though and hadn't though of it that way. Jonathon- I am in love with the pegs they would be perfect. Your room layout is my dream just didn't know if it would be achievable. I have a king size bed at the moment but it's a very big frame so much bigger than the standard measurements so if i turn it your way there is about a 8 cm gap to the shorter wall so it needs replacing. Man about the house- love the layout and interesting to get more than one view thank you so much All- can i please be cheeky and ask another question. I think my issue is a standard size double would fit e.g 190cm long but when i look at standard sites e.g John Lewis, Next, Dreams all of the beds seem to have a frame which is 208-210cm which would just be too long. Do you know where I can find a frame that is 190cm? I would have loved a flip storage bed but recognize that will be too long so I am open to any bed. Budget for bed up to about £700 ish. Less if obviously great and means more money to spend on the rest of room....See MoreAnyone got solar control glass ? Pergola or Brise Soleil Instead ?
Comments (8)Thanks for reply, seems very few people have it but the more I read on the amount of glass we are looking at in a south west orientation we will either need to use solar control glass or put quite an overhang in either with a brise soleil or pergola, always thought south would have suffered more but now understand during the worst heat of day from say 1-4 the sun beats directly on those windows quite low in sky, last week has been roasting sitting where those windows will be so been bit of an eye opener. Shame there does seem to be a bit of grey tint as for a good portion of year the solar gain wouldn't be a problem and of course in winter an advantage. With the amount of people going for big sliders and bifolds thought there would be more people experiencing overheating but maybe over thinking it ! In answer to skylight question we wouldn't be putting any in even though a single storey where all the glass is going, some of what we are doing is replacing a conservatory which was roasting and most of the heat seemed to come in through the roof or it certainly felt like it. Thanks, Lawrence...See MoreTom Howard Garden Design and Landscaping
