Original Crittall windows repairs

Just purchased a 1920s semi with a round bay window with original (I think) Crittall windows. Unfortunately some of the glass panes are badly cracked. Can the panes be replaced? Is it likely to be extortionate? Don't want to rush into replacing with UPVC or aluminium if they can be restored.

Any professionals on here able to come and have a look? Or recommendations. Based in SW16 London.

If you just want the cracked glass replaced, a local glazer or "glass replacement service" will be able to help. If you want the whole window (and steel Crittall frame) replaced they are thoroughly modernised now... The modern double glazed units offer far better heat insulation and help stop the dreaded condensation problems those much older windows suffer from. The strong steel frames are also treated to a molten zinc galvanising process and then painted in a super tough epoxy-free polyester powder coating, making them rust-proof and virtually maintenance free for a lifetime! We have new double-glazed Crittall french windows on 3 floors at a holiday home facing the beach. We have a long list of problems with them. They run with condensation on the frames in winter. The powder coating finish is unable to resist salt and sea air after less than 3 years and Critall are unable to suggest a maintenance regime for salt removal (but void the guarantee if you don't follow it). The hinges and handles are crude - not sealed or resistant - and have corroded/seized after a couple of years. I am sure they are ok in a sheltered setting and look fabulous but they have performed much worse than run-of-the-mill windows on our neighbours' houses. PM me if you're interested in some used ones. We're seriously thinking of taking them out.

Fiona - I’ve been looking into replacing some doors with Crittal style and have contacted loads of suppliers and companies. The one that I’ve been most impressed with is the company mentioned above by Lou Valdini - Merlin Windows in Yorkshire. (I’m in the East Midlands). They gave me a competitive quote really quickly and then I got a quote from the fitter mentioned. (They fit across the UK and they link in with Merlin to ensure timings etc). It’s likely that we will go ahead in the next few months. (Just need to convince husband as he prefers chunky timber 😂)

Depending on the condition of the window, you may be able to just change just the glass so it is double glazed. The process to do this is called bi-glass. Bi-glass is cheaper than replacing the windows and can provide all the benefits of double glazing while retaining the charm of your existing windows. crittal is the original classic slip profile, they have a long history. most aluminium window suppliers buy in profiles and manufacture the windows. the glazing unit needs to be well made from a good source as it is this that provides the u value. as long as the thermal break is manufactured correctly and the the windows are ideally internally beaded or if externally beaded has a security lock to prevent the glass being removed. they are generally branded " secured by design".
