Advice neded to block neighbours' solar panels

Our neighbour has solar pnels running along the entireity of her shed roof which faces our kitchen. We get a lot of glare which isn't great. Any ideas on how we can, tastefully, block the glare? In terms of height of trees etc. we'd be looking at approx 3m high, ideally somethong which won't have roots or grow too substantially.

A lot of trees are enormous, so what about fruit trees? They are grown on different rootstocks. Dwarf ones grow to about 10 feet or so and there are lots of apples (Malus) which will do the job - lovely blossom followed by fruit. Cornus Kousa is a smallish tree with lovely white flowers. Crabapples are another smallish tree as are Mountain Ash (Sorbus). They shed their leaves in winter but maybe the branches will break up the glare? Whichever tree you choose, check it’s eventual height on the RHS website, as some sellers can be a bit liberal with the truth!

How about some bamboo? You could grow it in troughs so it doesn't run away and fill the garden! You can get many different varieties in differing heights, so you should be able to find the perfect sized one.

Hi Tani Our garden is west facing & we have a window either side of the bifolds. We chose not to have roof openings to avoid extra heat from the sun. We are also considering adding an pergola/awning or something similar so that we can have the blinds open in summer without the hot sun streaming in. I am not a fan of hot weather (hence the integral blinds & air con) so avoid it as much as possible. I’m a bit confused what you mean about access to the traffic door...ours is by the kitchen end & is ideal. I’ve added a few pics so you can see our set up.

The more opaque / solid the covering the less daylight will come into the room. Light transmission. I think you want as much natural light as possible and I think the decorative / frosted laminate films will give you a good balance of light transmission and privacy. The benefit of curtains / blinds or similar is that you can open them up if you want to but you need to consider if this will actually happen that often. I would have thought you'd want curtains anyway for night time and to help keep heat in so perhaps a combination of both..?

We have a large rooflight at one end of our 8m south facing extension which gets the morning east sun and another at the opposite end - so nothing in the middle. I don’t find the rooflights too hot - they are just normal triple glazed lights. The hot part is the doors as they are fully glazed across the whole back ie 6m. We get sun all day and it can get very hot. I would initially suggest looking at solar coating (the proper stuff isn’t cheap - maybe £140-180 per door panel?) to reduce the heat in the first place. Not so bad if you don’t have that many windows/doors. Alternatively individual roller blinds for each panel that are designed to reduce the heat but still alow sunlight in. You can lower them midday when it’s too hot. (we will be doing this for next year as it’s cheaper than building a full permanent structure!) Or a wind out awning of course which is more flexible.

You could have a look at using pleached trees - these are like hedges on stilts. The closer they are to your house the more they will block your view.
