Living Rooms Furniture Design Dilemma

help with living room/dining room layout and furniture

I moved to a new flat and need to decide on the living room/dining room layout. I can decide if I should put a sofa by the window and dining table close near the kitchen or the other way around. The room is 4.80m x 3.50m (not including the kitchen) and also can’t decide if I should get a 2 seater, 3 seater or corner sofa (would it be too big for the space?). Some advice, ideas would be great.

Hi there,

Looking at your layout and depending on how many people will be seated I suggest looking into corner shaped sofa along the long wall closer to the window so that you can set up a TV on the opposite wall and get the most out of your space. However it does mean you may lose a little bit of the light from the doors. Alternatively you could have a 2 seater sofa and an armchair where your cupboards are to hide it a bit and still give you plenty of seating.

For your dining table I suggest to keep this closer to the kitchen. From the floor plan I don't think you will be able to have a very large table so if you do plan to entertain I suggest to buy an extending dining table. I am not sure how far the kitchen comes, if it is beyond the door on the opposite wall? Then I would suggest to going for a two seater sofa instead.

2 other options. Have 3 x 2 seater sofas. 2 matching ones opposite each other and a contrasting one opposite the fireplace. A slim console table with lamps, objets etc may look nice behind the sofa so you don't have a view of a back of a sofa from the dining room. Or have 2 x 2 seaters opposite each with 2 armchairs either side of the fireplace facing the dining room. Do you also need to consider where a tv would be positioned?

If you are thinking of having a TV in the sitting space you may want it in the interior of the room (opposite of the doors and windows) where you will get less glare from the light coming through the windows. That is assuming there are no (or few) windows on the other side (it appears darker where the photographer is standing). If no TV then I would consider were I (and guest) would spend more time, sitting area or dinning table? And would put that near the doors looking out into the garden.

Hey looks like a lovely room. I would opt for a L shaped sofa so it frames the fireplace area and identifies that as the cosy living room space and still allows easy access to a dining table by window. Your built in bench is a good idea to make most of the space, could have 2 either side so means beach can be tucked under table when not in use. Get a beautiful oversized ottoman for costing up by fire and a small side table rather than coffee table to maximise the space and maintain the luxury feel. Hope you have fun with your plans!

Depending on how many people watch tv, I'd try the same As Carolina's 2nd suggestion but with one chair where the tv is angled towards the sofa (but not pushed right against the wall) with the tv in the other alcove. I do agree with Emily though! Seating arrangements are important for a cosy/homely feel but so are various other elements so why not post pictures so people can make suggestions? If you've got the space I'd also add a slim console behind the sofa as it will give the feeling of separation from the hall. You can pick up ones that are 25cm deep so could always move the sofa forward a fraction. If you don't want to add pics then think lighting, art, plants, colour, a range of different textures, books, diffuser or scented candle plus a rug to zone the seating area and perhaps some things that have meaning to you. Do you also have anything in the dining area other than a table? I have an obsession with cocktail trollies (and it's costing us a fortune with a g&t or 2 after work for my husband! ) but they're great for when socialising and needn't just contain alcoholic drinks if you don't drink!
