Help with redesigning front of house
Hi,
Our front door is located to the side of the house which we were planning to move. As part of a larger extension, we intended to build a side extension which would create a new hallway, with the front door facing the front.
Unfortunately the builders have identified a few problems with this, and it is not worth the costs involved so we will keep the front door where it is.
Is there anyway to improve the current look?
We will be building a single storey room to the side of house, up to the front porch. Best idea we have come up is to extend the roof line of porch across the side so it looks something like the below picture:
Any ideas are appreciated

Comments (3)I would personally re-think trying to square it off with cladding and render. Not only is it an expensive option, but as a semi detached property changing the fundamental structure will always look odd when compared to the neighbours. It may actually devalue the property too. If you like the more modern style then I would focus on replacing the window frames as you suggest - if its all kept in one style this will also help. Then build a sloped roof porch to break up the profile of the front and replace the door with one that has full height windows either side to end up with a width the same as the window above - again this will re-enforce the symmetry, and linear balance that works well with contemporary styles....See MoreHelp to redesign detached house
Comments (8)My initial thoughts that neither option work well in two areas. Bedroom 3 upstairs is really tiny and would be better as the bathroom and the bedroom re-built elsewhere. The Kitchen is too small on both plans. Do you have any drains that you can access to the right?? Otherwise it's difficult to improve on Bed 3. Re- Plan 2 upstairs, I don't know how you're going to achieve the bathroom in that position as the soil pipe will be in the middle of the house. The drains first and foremost dictate the build. Therefore it's imperative to know where they are. Maybe if you could answer the above, then we can all have a little peruse on the matter. Comments (18)As others have said, if you cut the grass at the back and remove any obvious weeds, then you’ll have your “canvas”. I wouldn’t use a designer as a) I’m Yorkshire and far too tight and b) if you don’t know what you want yet, you’ll be in danger of really going OTT, to find out later, it’s not really you. D never really had a decent garden and moved into a new build over 10 years ago with a landscaped garden, I then filled a lot of gaps as I didn’t take into account, that plants grow. (Who knew?). 5 years later, I realised that I wasn’t that much of a gardener and that spending hours and hours every week tending it wasn’t my plan, so we stripped out loads of smaller plants and simplified it. If you want to sit out and enjoy it with fiends and family but don’t want to spend ages looking after it, then go for shrubs around the edges. If you want a new hobby or to test your gardening skills and like-ability I’d create a tiny herb patch near your door. This will give you an idea of whether you like gardening or not. I wouldn’t try and create your masterpiece in one go. Measure it all and play around with different designs.(PowerPoint worked fine for me) and then do a side at a time. As for your front garden, to be honest I’d tackle that first as it’s what you see every day when you come home and it’ll look lovely at Christmas. Just turf where it is, as I see it already has edging, again just cutting that and treating it with lawn care should be fine for now. A pot either side of the front door and then decide on the driveway. The resin ones do look nice, we have block paving that also looks nice but still has to be weeded and fresh sand brushed in between the bricks every year. Do you mean something like this? Blue is the side extension, and pinky lines where you wanted to extend but no longer are because of the pipes etc?

Yes that is right. I have drawn a sketch here. We are building the new room in red, but not the hall shown in green.
