I think the curtains are crowding the window and not allowing enough light in. I would go for a more contemporary look and bring the curtains back onto the wall beside the window as there is enough space. A wave curtain design is the perfect for this look. Then you can change cushions maybe the rug and add some other brighter complimentary colours.

@Joanne Evans thank you! i would love to be able to make it that wide but we don’t have a huge garden and need to leave space for the boys to play. I will hopefully dig another small bed on the other side of the garden once I know i have done this one right. I am content with small plants and flowers, I just need flowers And plants Which can survive footballs etc!! I will google for a soil probe- will any do the job?

I agree also. Remove number 5 and use something else to fill the back fence. It looks like you have training wires along the back fence for a climber? Are you trying to establish an ivy? If so then ivy won’t need wires as such as it will just cling to the fence but you could use the wires for something else as well. How about an evergreen clematis (there’s usually a clematis for any type of situation) https://www.thorncroftclematis.co.uk/clematis/evergreen-clematis.html In future, if other plants fill out the gap nicely, I’d also think of removing tree 4 and let the other hawthorns do their thing up the corner. They can get very big if you let them. You could also add a feature along the fence, I think a large birdhouse or dovecote would look perfect.

i would match the pots definitely but you could swap your choice of plants, depending on what you want. if you wanted lot maintenance plants id maybe go with something simple like mini fir trees, or small willow trees which can look really pretty even in colder days. Or if you wanted something more involved and needed a bit more hands on grooming maybe something like a lilac tree theyre beautiful in colour but also made need some pruning.

In your opinion which two would u pick for a damp shade heavy clay soil up against a 6ft fence (raised bed) maybe 4ft in height at back of bed, smaller choice at front, thanks so much.
