Hi Danny, I understand your issue with dog mud on cream carpets. I've had dogs all my life. We've also always had cream carpets which, in my eyes, is a ridiculous idea for my family because if it's not the muddy dog ruining the carpet, it's a family member spilling tea and coffee! It seems like you want less hassle/less cleaning. Honestly? Get an easily cleanable floor. If you think the muddy dog is the issue, just wait until your child is moving and throwing food/being sick/god knows what! Tony's images are great - it seems like covering the pond might be a great opportunity to make this a "dog" area. I can see a small path on the left hand side of your garden, maybe you could widen this and have it leading towards an area with bark/grass. I definitely wouldn't recommend letting your dog do its business on the decking. Not only will it damage the wood, but it's an area where everyone will walk, so stepping in poo is inevitable! As a quick fix for the mud on carpets - pop some old towels on the floor near the entrance to the garden. Every time your dog comes in with muddy paws, use the towel to wipe off the excess mud. As for the poo, where ever your dog poos it will need to be picked up, so no fix for this! From experience, my dogs have always found an area in the garden they like to poo in. We just keep checking it every now and then. I have to admit, it seems a little sad to think the dog wouldn't mix with the family in the garden, as my childhood was so enjoyed having our dog in the garden with us. But this is YOUR house, and whatever works best for you is the answer. Good luck/let us know what you decided.

New seeded grass grew fine until the winter came.

Without any idea of where you are (how bad/wet your winter was) and the soil conditions and local environment we can only guess. My first guess would be that the root systems of the grass seedlings drowned. When did you plant it and how well was it established by the time the rains came? Unless it had at least a couple of months from when the seedlings statred to show I'd suggest that as the most likely answer. If drainage is poor in your garden it is almost certainly the answer. You say it is now brown earth. Have any weeds managed to come through? One reason for the grass dying off could be an overspray of weed killer or other harmful chemical. If nothing else looks like it is able to grow there this one is probably nearer to the truth, or possibly some combination of this and the first answer. It is possible, but I would say unlikely unless you are surrounded by countryside and there are at least a few shortened tufts of grass left, that nocturnal animals are the guilty parties. Rabbits perhaps? Disease is another possibility but again it would be unlikely to clean all of the growth off. Have you noticed high levels of bird, especially crow and blackbird, activity? Or animals such as badgers, stoats, weasels? This would indicate chafer grubs or leatherjackets eating the roots away. The birds or animals would be looking for the insect grubs, not the grass, but would dig or peck grass and earth up in order to get at them. The answer, if drowning is the culprit, is to check the drainage first and if generally OK - we did receive extraordinary downpours - re-seed now or very shortly, giving the grass a whole spring summer and autumn to get properly established. It should then survive any future such downpours. Otherwise, report back and we'll try and advise you accordingly.

Hi I know not many have fake grass but it's becoming a really good option. Aesthetically it looks like grass but you don't have to worry about muddy patches, shady areas or cutting it. It does of course require some maintenance and needs to be laid on a good base. I actually wouldn't be so quick to level the garden out, having a step up makes the eye go upwards towards the sky. The area in front of the windows could be paved, gravelled or lay decking squares across it. The boundary walls are lovely and could easily have some climbers on them, using tensioned wires, helping to highlight this feature yet provide more green without making deep planting beds. The tree at the back is possibly a bay tree and might be worth keeping as it gives something of height and structure as long as it's in good condition. Mature trees can be costly so worth keeping it possible. Hope that helps!
