Help please with living /dining room lighting, old meets new...
Comments (9)Hi. Just a thought but do you need/want the wall lights? Could you not just change the ceiling lights and add floor lights? We had wall lights in our georgian house and removed them all rather than trying to find decent replacements. I know wall lights are back in at the moment and particularly for industriał style but it may be the easy option. If this works then there are lots of fantastic ceiling lights around at the moment...See MoreBlank canvas dining room! Advice please
Comments (3)I think wallpaper might make the room look smaller. Warm grey would be good, with a lighter shade on the other walls. The table legs look painted - you could paint the chairs too, to tone in with the walls, or alternatively contrast with them in a colour that would tie in with the rug. A large mirror on the right hand wall would help the illusion of more space, and pictures elsewhere, small ones in different shapes but same colour frames artistically arranged. More lights will be good....See MoreLiving room and dining room advice
Comments (22)The Persian rug is lovely. We have several (sitting room, study, hall, bedroom ..... they're a bit addictive), with fabric using a couple of the colours in each for stuff like cushions, curtains etc. with neutral walls. I agree with minnie about the patterns. To get the right colour combinations, at a reasonable price, you could find a company that does a range with the colour or colours you're looking for and then look for remnants on ebay, to get them at bargain prices. That's worked well for us. Stuff like this:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Schumacher-Curtain-Fabric-PASHA-PAISLEY-2m-POMEGRANATE-100-WOOL-/322509242456?hash=item4b170c8058:g:DwsAAOSw42JZAwWm And if you're looking for another rug to complement the one you've got, www.carpetu2.co.uk has a massive range on-line, at better prices than I've been able to find here. They're actually in Greece, but don't charge for shipping, which is very fast....See MoreLiving/dining decor advice needed please
Comments (4)Because the sofas are big heavy and dark I agree that you need to lighten up this room. I wouldn't have additional furniture because I think it looks full already but I might swap your little table lamp for a standard lamp to you have a light that is the same height as the TV. I also think your mirror is undersized, it should hang portrait to make the room seem taller - a round mirror would also work. I would get a white dining table. The mahogany trunk seems to obscure the view of the fireplace- perhaps a lower table should be better. I would also get an oversized houseplant. I don't mind the fireplace. I think you can put any colour on the walls and I don't think it has to be neutral but you should replace the curtains with much paler-perhaps even white. I think one of the reasons for replacing the curtains is the now slightly dated pattern. Perhaps put pattern in art or cushions so it can be changed more regularly. I like the rug but it does dictate your decorating choices- could it go in another room? If it can I think that your instinct is right that a large pale textured rug would be comfy and visually break up the dark tones of the sofas and floor. Lastly I would add a throw and a couple of cushions to make the sofas less imposing, add pattern and break up their darkness....See MoreEllie
