questions on flush windows

Hi everyone

We are going to install flush upvc windows but I’m unsure whether to have 3 or 4 panes in the 3 larger windows. Having 4 panes keeps the width of the panes in all windows closest.

The top right & bottom right windows are both 2.1m x 1.27m. The bottom left window is 2.3m x 1.19m. The two remaining smaller windows are 1.52m x 1.27m.

I know having less frame means more natural light but I’m not too bothered about that. I also know about safety regs but we could have floating mullions to overcome that issue.

I’ve mocked up rough plans to give an idea...hopefully they’ll post & post in order! Which do you think looks better?

Window sills are something that confuse me. I’m not sure why but I’m not a fan. Just tried looking for some images without sills that are ordinary residential rather than fancy commercial and couldn’t find many good examples but did find some. I think it’s a good idea to finish them more simply but I’m sure you will need something to cover what is underneath current sills so do you have any ideas about what you’d want to use? Ps couldn’t resist adding the window seat pic that came up unexpectedly:)

I prefer 3... I don't notice that the width is closer with the 4... it seems more uniform and more similar in my mind to keep 3 for all of them

Thanks rinq, our current windows are similar to the larger ones you’ve mocked up but with a fan light across the top of each middle pane...the bottom left window has 4 panes. I really appreciate your suggestion but wish to change from our current set up :)

We changed our windows and to be honest went for the most glass and the fewest bars. I think I focused (rightly or wrongly) on how they would look from the inside, and wherever possible had some that had no bars at all. I do like a bit of asymmetry though.

Thanks @colourhappy. I’m having doubts about the two smaller windows & whether to have 2 panes instead of 3 (if possible) like @rinq posted. The larger windows could have 3 panes. Aarghhhh. These are a few photos I have been saving for inspiration. Think I need a coffee, lol.

Maybe my bf’s comment will be helpful every time he was fed up of making decisions between things on our renovation/extension ... “in a years time we won’t be able to tell/won’t notice it anyway...”

Sometimes it was more helpful than others, but I decided when I was really torn and could see both sides and didn’t know which I preferred, it was probably a fair comment.

There’s not always a right answer, and unfortunately sometimes it’s only with the power of hindsight you think of another view - both look really good at the end of the day :)

I mean, I often wanted to hit him when he said it... as at the time I was convinced it would make or ruin the entire project lol. But it did definitely help with some decisions.

Can also see if you’re really disappointed when that coin lands heads instead of tails! As a guide of what you really want?

My favourite is the 3 and 2 combo. The 3 panes on the large windows seem to make the house feel wider and the 2 panes on the smaller windows just feels more balanced and draws your eye to the door? I assume it's a 30's house too (?) so feels more in keeping having the different number of panes? Plus obviously less panes will let more light in. That's my non-expert view though so it will be interesting to hear what the window company say :)

Thanks Minnie. It’s a 1950s house & all of the current casement windows have 3 panes. One window company said the 2.1m & 2.3 windows should have 4 panes & the 1.5m windows 3 panes (because 600mm is the widest window you can have for flush) but the other window company have said we can have whatever size we want. We’ve gone back to check. The local houses I have seen with flush windows all seem to have smaller panes which in our case if we followed suit would mean 3 & 4 for our windows. Aaarrrrgh. Time for coffee :)

I prefer the 3 on the large and 2 on the smaller.

The 4 panes just looks too busy, and the large central pane with 2 narrow side panes looks odd

Hi everyone, me again (wave)...

We have decided we like 3 & 2 panes but have been told due to the size they would need to be top hung (like option 4 in the pic). I’ve read that these aren’t as good as side hung for air circulation - has anyone found this? Feel like I’m going round in circles with this ;)

I can't find anything which says ventilation isn't good for awning windows, just the opposite in fact. The only potential downside (??!) is that they may get dirtier when open. Given our weather the top opening may actually be preferable?!

We would prefer flush casement style but the playroom window is 2.3m so too wide for side hung as believe the maximum is 750mm...
