Tell us: Do you have any home renovation regrets?
Comments (32)Whilst I recognise there's a few tradespeople on here bemoaning fussy clients I have to say my biggest regrets when renovating my house was not being specific enough with trades! We had an electrician put in an extra light switch in the hall to control both the downstairs and upstairs lighting. He put it in a good 10-15cm lower than the other switch further along the same wall which looked completely ridiculous. Made him move it in line with the other one much to his annoyance. Another similar incident was with a vertical column rad for the kitchen - whilst I was specific enough this time to ask it be centered to the wall it was on, he installed it much higher than needed with about 30cm of pipe sticking out the bottom! It would have looked much better in line with the doorframe adjacent. Had to learn to live with that one. We had engineered wood floors put in upstairs - the fitter used the shortest wall in the smallest room to take a plumbline from. When it came into the hall it was obviously on a complete wonk. By this point I'd gotten a bit better at speaking up and ensuring we actually got what was needed (and paid for!). He had to take it up and re-lay using the hall as the plumbline. Looked so much better but he was extremely annoyed! After all this I learned to use masking tape to direct exactly where pipes/light switches/trim should be fitted so there was no room for 'interpretation'. I also forced myself to speak up more and advocate for what I really wanted. That said I'm a designer by trade so I generally know what I want and how to make it look good but was definitely a bit too shy to contradict trades in the beginning!...See MoreAny lighting experts who can help please (which LED bulbs)
Comments (7)Those Philips bulbs aren't bad and it does look like you have allowed for a lot of lighting, so I would suggest waiting until it is painted. A white ceiling really does make a big difference. If you do find it too dim after it is painted, I would have suggested using a bulb like this: https://www.mr-resistor.co.uk/item.aspx?i=17256 The LED United Pro-Reality range is great quality, although a little expensive. It has a high CRI and a lot of Lumen per Watt. The bedrooms with 4 x downlights would likely be sufficient with the lower lumen Philips bulbs you have. Comments (10)I don't see any sign of it in your phots. As people have said JKW looks like red asparagus spears when it first appears in the spring. It's also quite easy to spot when it's died back in the winter, as there will be straight, hollow leafless 'canes' in varying diameters which are easily crushed - that said not all hollow canes are JKW though! Ground elder is the very devil to get rid of. Even the smallest bit of root can grow into a plant. We ended up digging up the entire flower bed. Literally checking though all of the roots of the plants we wanted to keep - fortunately ground elder roots are quite easy to spot because they're so much brighter and whiter than most other plants. We then potted up those plants for a year in terracotta pots. Then we dug over the flower bed again and then laid weed suppression fabric over for a year. After that year, we forensically dug over the soil again, rotavated some manure into the soil, re checked the things the terracotta pots for any signs of it. If there were any stray bits growing they were weed killed. We're now clear of it, but I do still keep a beady eye open for any signs of it - the bed looks wonderful now though!!...See MoreBest ceiling light for kitchen when you can't have spots?
Comments (10)i can't have surface mounted ones really as it's all lathe and plaster ceiling so is going to be hard work. There is already a cable for a strip light so we can have one pendant or bar light in there which would light most of the kitchen run and then we have the hood for lighting over the hob which I always use. And I'm going to try and get the light switch changed to a 3 way so I can have something over the table area separate (switched wall light hanging one) or as suggested, a plug in one I can hook over the table which would give softer lighting. Would I be better handing the bar light in line with the oven ie in the walkway of the units and angling the lights towards the units rather than having it over the back kitchen run?...See MoreRibena Drinker
