Renovating Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Floating shelves in Bathroom

I am looking to buy floating shelves that will support a sink to go in our bathroom. Anyone any idea where I can buy these or get some made? Is this a more expensive route than doing a traditional vanity unit? Picture attached. Many thanks!

That looks like a bespoke item to be honest. It is lovely so may be worth getting some quotes from a carpenter or two.

I've built a similar shelf out of an old oak table top. Not floating though, as a regular sized wash basin went on top. But a carpenter can surely build you some, it's not rocket science.

Please do make sure it's coated properly, so all the grains are sealed.

I wouldn't change much regarding the layout/placement of white goods either. But it'd be possible to get some extra. For example, an L- or P-shaped shower bath would get a nicer shower space. You'd end up with the wider part by the window though so may then also consider opaque glazing or a screen there. A concealed cistern in the back wall would bring that forward by around 10cm. If you don't want to loose all that space, a boxed-in cistern and shelves above may give you a little storage back. On the washing machine: you triggered my inner geek :-) This may be possible. You need to research a few things for this: A) a slim depth washing machine (usually 425mm) B) availability of a height reduction kit for it (if these are avail gets height down from 850mm to 800mm) C) use an extra-flat bottle trap for the basin D) partly embed that into a thin washtable (to make the surface then a total of ~100mm above the machine) If all these go together it should just be possible to fit washtable, drains, basin trap and the machine underneath into a box about 910x600x500mm (HxWxD) which is kitchen unit height. The countertop sink would sit above that. Maybe a little bit of extra space could be gained still if you'd construct a basin from a flat shower tray with an integrated trap (a Wedi fundo plano is 60mm high) but I'm not sure how to put the washing machine drain on then. I don’t have one but I really like it, so cute! It’s seems there are knots under each shelf so it shouldn’t be too wobbly. In all honesty though, does your bathroom need it? You already have lots of lovely things in it especially the plants, but if you are a maximalist, go for it!

I've been waiting for someone to ask me this :-) I think your first idea is a good one. You could go one of two routes: 1. part tile in white satin ceramic and edge with chrome or satin strip or a pencil tile - something from Original Style Glassworks range would look great but they are pricey- then paint two walls in a strong but not saturated blue toned grey: something like F&B Hardwick White or Little Greene's Urbane Grey and Inox - if possible get two shades on the walls. For the floor I would go with a grey and white lino check and accessorise as you've suggested - I would steer clear of anything orange that is going to accentuate the orange tone in the suite but ochre tones would work, for example macrame plant hangers. I would stick to chrome and satin nickel. Choose an off white for any woodwork - Flake White has a very slight hint of brown which would balance the champagne without you being conscious of it. 2. Again use white satin tiles and edge with chrome or satin nickel strip or a glass pencil tile but this time "lose" the champagne tone among other neutrals as you've suggested: from the Fired Earth colour card, shades like Canvas, White Ochre, Old White, Papyrus and again Flake white would work well. Again a grey and white check would work for the floor or even this wood effect, which picks up the brown tones. Accessorise with dark blue/grey accents and plenty of greenery. I always advise use of a sample board. Play about with paint samples. We sell painted A4 sheets for £1 each plus postage - cheaper than tester pots and more effective. If the different elements work together on the board, they will work in the room. Alternatively we offer sample boards to buy or hire - £30 or £15 respectively. Each board includes a range of compatible samples which you then pick and mix, eliminating what you don't like until you arrive at the scheme you want. Good luck!
