Where do you source sustainable furniture from?

Hi ;-)

I'm moving in to my new flat next June, so started casually browsing the options, mainly furniture.

Since this is going to be my first proper place, I would like to invest on well made products that would last long! And I'm concerned about sustainability; how it's made, where it's made, from what it's made, etc.

I'm also thinking of buying vintage pieces - I love mid-century, and also sustainable.

But I found it hard to get all the information on a single page. All I can find were the websites for some brands do sustainable furniture, which quite weren't my taste.....

I would love to know if there's any brand you could recommend or website/platform that I could browse and compare if any exists! I'm so used to go to browse Farfetch or Lyst for clothes, so it would be great if there's one for furniture as well.

But I'm up for any recommendations ;-)

There’s an eBay seller called modernancient who has mostly mid century stuff. You can also just search eBay for 1950s furniture or 1960s furniture and that will bring up you loads of midcentury items. Also worth looking at your local auction house, our local one has masses of mid century furniture every week.

I've got quite a lot of furniture second hand, including both dressers (although the top half of one has been repurposed as a tall table/stand of sorts), a bed, mirrors, tables, a conservatory three piece bamboo suite (£50) and ikea bar stools. Also inherited a tall pine chest of drawers and one half of the bunk bed I slept in as a child. My parents are always telling me to let it go but I don't see why I should- I have a lot of memories associated with it and an idea to turn it into a mezzanine style bed to free up floor space in a small bedroom.

IKEA is great for anyone starting out, furnishing a rental property or just not sure what they want. It may not be the best "last for ever" quality, but it does the job, looks reasonable and can be mixed with other pieces over time. It tends to be good quality for the money. Tastes change over time and while my parents invested as much as they could in the furniture they bought, as they wanted it to last a lifetime, I prefer to think I will be able to change and update easily in the future. I spent a fortune on some furniture a few years ago, that I would love to replace now. We didn´t have a nearby IKEA at the time unfortunately.

Hi, I would personally create zones in the room, a living room zone and a dining zone and I’d do this by having a sofa across the middle of the room looking towards the fireplace and then maybe some armchairs against the wall where to sofa currently is, so they’re looking out the bay windows, and then have a nice big (or as big as can be for the size room) dining table behind it. I think it’ll make the loving room section feel more cosy

@minnie101 Thank you very much! The scope of the article is very wide, so was able to realise there were many parts that I have been overlooking.

@obobble I don't know why I wasn't even thinking of going offline - will def check the vintage fairs as well.

For vintage mid century stuff, Etsy, perhaps? I bought a few pieces there. Also, antique shops (ours where I live has “rooms” by the period).
completely unrelated but how do you spell your name - Aen? Kim is easy... (I lived in SKorea im 2013/16 and have such fond memories)

@nmlondon Ah actually I was checking out Etsy time to time, not recently though. Thanks for reminding me! And, pretty close! I'm impressed. It's Yeon, similar to Young without the g. I was in Korea until 2016, what a coincidence. I'm glad you have nice memories
