need help with north facing bedroom
Comments (2)North facing bedrooms are not easy to decorate. Personally I wouldn't try to make it lighter with colour or wallpaper. There are lots of examples of dark wall colours in north facing bedrooms, the designer Miles Redd is doing it very well. The key to your room is good lighting. Spotlights, statement chandelier, oversized table lamps on either side of the bed, a floor lamp for the dark corner would be my starting points. In terms of colour go for what makes you smile and feel good for you. Bold colours are always a good choice pink, teal, purple even navy blue. When using bold colour balance it out with lots of white. For example on your bedcover, cushions, pillow, curtains, small armchair and even a rug. Wall cover finish should be gloss rather than matt. I have lots of free info and colour combos on my blog which you can find on my website. I'm happy to offer free advice and help you further. Hope this helps a bit. Comments (14)Hi Emma. For a long narrow room (relatively speaking as it isn't narrow!), you could paint the 2 short walls the dark colour as this will "correct" the room's proportions rather than paint the long wall as it will accentuate the length. Alternatively you'd normally paint the fireplace wall to highlight the feature. I think as you've got doors it should break it up a bit but I'd do the doors in the same colour. I would probably go for something a bit richer than pitch blue, like Hague blue. I know whose room that is you've pictured in the 2nd pic so will try and find the colour but am sure it was a valspar paint! You could also try downpipe which works well in a north facing room. I'd probably put these with warm whites/neutrals rather than grey. Elephants breath can work really well in a north facing room but can also just look grey and agree with littlesongs comments! You could also go dark on all walls and layer the lighting, add mirrors etc. Or if you decide light then people can make colour suggestions for that :)...See MoreLighting for north facing kitchen
Comments (2)Hi ! Just looking at your plans briefly - it’s clear that due to cabinetry on all four walls - you won’t get a very big table in there ! You mentioned no wall units due to having enough storage elsewhere - but - if you had wall cabinets storage and storage to the patio doors on the top wall - you could take off some perimeter cabinets to give room for a table that’s larger than ‘just’ a four seater one ? There’s a lot more that could be done with this space in my professional opinion. Re colours - in a north facing room if you chose ‘winter’ colours you will need to warm it up a tad with woods and other tricks like tactile accessories. Scandi style for example uses whites and pale greys warmed up with pale woods and real or faux animal fur on benches or seats to add warmth ... Alternatively brilliant white cabinetry on pale Egyptian Cotton walls can look great too and is warmer than most grey toned paint . re lighting - if this drawings is true and it’s a flat extension then lighting could be LEDs in ceiling throughout - but if the new part is a vaulted ceiling then cable lighting might work or stronger LEDs higher up could also work but there will be a shadow line where the change in height happens. ... To summarise, this is ok - could be better and if worked on by someone with more of a ‘design driven’ background - time could be spent trying different colours for you and looking at lighting options and the table would be included in the drawings to show you what space you actually end up with ... you could see what it could look like in a more real image. If you click on my name or icon it will take to to my pro page with some past projects that might give you an idea of the difference a design done purposely for you, with no other agenda, could make. ( then send it to all the online retailers and builders merchants etc to compare like for like on their prices )...See MoreBlue paint for North facing home office
Comments (12)Thank you for your photos and reply . The pinks really do look beautiful. I particularly like the colour scheme of the first one. I did think paneling may solve my issue so paneling part of the wall the same colour as the book shelf then painting above but whilst that room would look lovely, I would be at odds with the style of the rest of the house which doesn't have paneling and has a glass staircase for example. The desk is actually a dark navy but perhaps black would be a better match? I think the built in bookshelf is somewhat complicating matters as would you suggest I paint that pink too? The pinks pair beautifully with black but I wonder whether that may be too much for my North facing room particularly as the bookshelf will span the entirety of the wall? I have seen some beautiful studies all in deep dark blue but I wonder if this would be too dark? I have a TV room which I embraced the dark in a deep slate blue which I love but, as it's a TV room it works being dark. I'm not sure whether a home office would work as well. As you can see I'm getting myself in a right jumble! I have recently done my North facing bathroom and that took forever to get right (down pipe units with farrow and ball dive grey) so I'm trying to avoid painting and repainting this time!...See MoreTani H-S
