1960’s bungalow in old mining town

So we were feeling brave and decided to open up the plastered over fireplace. Only to reveal what we think is a small water tank which would have been heated by a fire. It’s been brick and mortared around. I cannot find a lintel this low down and the chimney breast has dodgy plaster work over it. Does this mean the lintel is higher up? Will the chimney breast / chimney fall down if I remove anymore along with the tank? Any help is hugely appreciate.

I’m not looking to put in a log burner but more so a feature fireplace with beam and hearth and tv to sit on wall above it.

When we opened up our fireplace I asked a builder whether it was safe to do so, as I had the same fears (no hidden water tank though!). The builder was my brother so no real hardship and he said it would be fine, and it was. I wonder if it is worth doing the same, just to be sure? We removed all the rubble and found a neat fireplace within, so we cleaned the bricks and just added a fire surround and hearth.

This is what I’d like! yes I think I’m at the point where I need to get someone in :( but the wrong time of year as all busy. And carpets arrive in 2 weeks

The log burner is in the heart of our home, in a open plan living / dining / cooking space, the warmth reflects on the floorboards and i can drag a chair in front of it to curl up and cosy. I would love to ask any advice on the best type of slow burning logs to buy?

We love our shutters! We live on a busy street and the shutters give us the privacy we need, and also smarter up our windows. We have wanted shutters for ages, and received a few quotes which were all so different, but too expensive for us. A couple of months ago we came across a company www.shuttershack.co.uk they are the sister company of a already established company. Anyway we ordered ours as DIY shutters which saved us literally ££'s. We have fitted ourselves. But they do offer a fitting service, which still seems a lot cheaper than other companies. Happy days.

Yes that was one of the issues with our place. Narrow corridors, poorly lit. But by rearranging the access to key spaces, blocking some doors and creating a new double width doorway to the principle room, what was a narrow hallway is now integrated and useful. By converting the large loft, we now have a stairwell lit by two velux windows which also throw light into the heart of the building. Lastly the old underhouse garage is now a studio, glazed with full height blue-grey aluminium windows and a door. Our originally depressing, generic ittle bungalow on a sloping site has become a four bed live-work space on three levels that is beginning to feel more like our home

I too would ditch the vertical blinds. Our last house had horizontal wooden cladding that had been replaced with red roof type tiles, overlapping vertically roof style. It was done before we bought the house but looked so much better than the other houses in the street. And didn't need any further upkeep. Having ditched the blinds I'd plant something spectacular in the front garden to soften the view from the road and to give a bit more privacy. Maybe a Japanese maple, which is stunning in the autumn? Not so much good in the winter though! Angie

Postpone your carpets and do the fireplace properly after Christmas when you can get a builder. Short term there must be a bookcase or similar in your house that you can put in front of the hole

I think this is a back boiler. Quite common for them to be left in when bricked up. I’d perhaps get a plumber in to make double sure that it’s disconnected and give advice if you want it removed.
