Fireplaces Design Dilemma Living Rooms

What style of contemporary gas fire/fire Place will look nice here?

Hello
I am looking to buy a gas fire to put in the chimney breast. Into the existing space, I would like something contemporary looking as I will also be having a TV above the fire. My existing TV is 49"... Will a smaller gas fire look out of place below a big tv?? Knocking bricks out and replastering is not an option for me either :/
All ideas and pictures are welcome, thank you as always.

I personally do not like TVs over a fireplace. I know it’s very popular but they are not good for watching TV as they are too high and can cause neck pain and headaches. I wonder how many of those people visit the doctors complaining of neck and head pain! A TV should be at eye level or below when you are sitting down. Also wouldn’t the heat from the fire cause possible damage to the TV?

Have your fire by all means, but the TV is better on a low unit on one side of the fireplace, depending on where your sofas are placed. Don’t discard electric fires. There are some really nice modern ones available and you just plug in and go. Here’s some examples.

Due to lack of space, I put my tv above gas fire, done 5 years now no sore neck and no problems with the heat issue.

Good luck! Downstairs loos aren't very exciting. I would probably go for farrow and ball Hague blue all over as pictured and then add prints on the walls. My loo is very dark grey with lots of these animal prints. I think they were a fiver from achica and then black frames off of ebay for £2.50 or something.obviously you don't need to go for this style but maybe something a little quirky to add interest. I'd go for mid or dark grey in the bathroom with a lighter or off white wall but it depends on how dark you want to go. Darker can often look more expensive but mid grey with white walls will also look good.

I voted for the parquet flooring. We have a small hall with one that we have tried to renovate that is quite dark. I was impressed with the various colours they were able to show, quite beautiful especially the lighter coloured greyish overtones on one particular photo.

I agree with buzzmummy in that I don't think it would work so well with the picture rail… but would be OK with the coving (if it's fairly plain rather than ornate…?). I prefer the second picture she posted as personally I don't think the modern fire suits the mantel/surround in the first one. Our last house was a 1930s semi and it had coving and dado rail when we moved in. We removed the dado but left the coving. We took out the marble fireplace that was in there and had the square-ish hole in the chimney breast plastered neatly so it was just that - a hole in the wall (with chimney above for Father Christmas!). We put a granite tile in the bottom as a shelf just because we were doing the patio and it happened to fit, and then we had flowers or candles in it. We were getting around to putting a fire in and I was doing research just like you. Never did it before we moved in the end but after my research I was confident it would have looked nice. I do think a squarer shape is more in keeping with the traditional style, rather than the wide sort in the original picture you posted.

The unfortunate truth is the TV and fireplace are both competing for the same space and any solution is a compromise. Regardless of your desire for a fire it is bad anatomically to hang a TV too high. There is plenty of information online about the best viewing height and viewing distances for different sizes of TV. All this advice is ignored by many people - including professional interior designers. Looking at the design of fireplace you supplied perhaps you could bring a TV into the room and place it on the raised hearth when you want to watch it? My bet is that is the arrangement you would normally live with and then you would remove the TV from your room when you have guests? Or you could put a TV on a mobile stand that you can place in position when you want to watch it? You can get stands that would also take a SKY box or similar. The problem is trailing cables - and where the stand is positioned when not in front of the fire! You can even get devices that enable TVs to rise from the floor but they’re very expensive. Or you could project onto a screen that unfolds from the ceiling. Also very expensive. In my case, I opted to forgoe the fireplace, knowing the TV played a more important part in my everyday life. The room was then designed accordingly. Am I happy with the result? Yes and no but as I said at the beginning any solution - other than a separate TV room - is a matter of compromise.
