trundle bed that looks like double?

In the middle of decoration the old lounge which will now become the main guest bedroom (ground floor) The 3rd spare room is currently my office.

We were thinking about how rarely we will have guests staying over and that we would use it more as a sort of workout room (so my OH doesn’t clutter the open plan room up with his sports stuff! LOL) and also in Summer it’s a north facing room we could sleep in when it got too hot upstairs (loft room!)

So, I was thinking that we could either have a sort of trundle bed (so permanent single but that extends out and up to make a double)
OR
a Murphy bed?

The trundle is cheaper but I hate the fact that there is only one headboard and footboard so would want one where the pull out has parts that make it look like a proper double?

The Murphy would give us floor space and a double mattress but it’s a lot more expensive and might look off just a big tall cupboard thing on the wall? Not exactly elegant.

Any thoughts??

What about an air bed? I saw this one on Amazon

Or a normal sofa bed? lots of different styles, designs and prices. https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/vimle-2-seat-sofa-bed-graesbo-black-blue-s69285581/ folds out so the back of the sofa is the headrest

How much light does your room get? The wooden one looks more "New Mexico/Arizona" style to me, which is nice, but assuming that you're in England, both of the options are very dark, very imposing. If you have a really bright, pretty large bedroom, they can work. In a normal English-sized bedroom with our often bluish-grey tinged light from October to March, I think they might be overpowering and a tad gloomy. Have you looked at this type of design? No probs,,, it will come on at £749 then it will come on again at £499. I've managed to get everything I've needed for half price, has took a bit of time but everything just rotates on the half price sale. Also, have a look and see if there's a dwell near you as they offer lots of ex display in the store, I got a side unit for a quarter of the price and not a mark on it. AND,,, some of the things you see on dwell are by kare design, amazon and Wayfair both stock kare design at a price decreases from dwells prices, like their artwork was £399 and I got it for £75 from Wayfair, slightly smaller but only £79. Thanks Zoe, I agree with you re toilet being more of a priority. The amount of squabbles that would save... It feels a little backwards to most other properties that have a toilet downstairs and the full bathroom upstairs but I can’t see another way to do it and get 3 double bedrooms upstairs. At the moment my twins have L shaped bunks but in 7 years they’ll probably be over 6’ tall so I want to have enough space for 2 singles too. 🤔 With your other idea I could move the wall over another 10cm but it would be right up against the window frame, would that look ok?

Out of interest....or boredom😅, I did a little digging. Jonathan - I get a bad back so need a comfy mattress when I do use the room so can’t use an air one unfortunately.

@Gabby We do have a sofa bed in the lounge but they never seem to be that comfy as a proper mattress?

@gabby - plus that is a lot more expensive than a bed so I guess you would need to spend more on a comfy sofa bed to get the same effect :0/

Hi Tani. How about a daybed that converts to a double? Something like this? https://www.aaabeds.co.uk/sweet-dreams-enigma-wooden-guest-bed Most of IKEAs daybeds also convert to a double but could be restricted to their mattress size which is a small EU size 80x200cm. See what you mean about the headboard tho. How about stacking single beds? Think I saw a very basic pair on amazon. Perhaps creating some sort of headboard which is attached to the wall? Just floating a few more ideas:)

If the loft gets hot on a few days a year wouldn’t it be cheaper to buy an air conditioner than a Murphy bed?

I suspect you've basically already worked out the only options that will give you a decent mattress for your back if you'll be sleeping in there for potentially a few months each year!

I think if it's just guests, not having a headboard isn't the end of the world for a night or 2... but I wonder if you could create something? like Rachel suggested is the best option.

Trundle bed, as the cheaper option. 2 decent mattresses for your back. and a make/buy a single headboard that you can attach to the pull out bed as and when you need it... (and hope you can store it somewhere under the bed!)

Our bedroom is north facing, and in this years hot spell (30 deg +) it was baking hot, so I wouldn’t rely on the room being particularly cool at that time. i think Jonathan’s idea of getting some form of aircon is an excellent idea, and then go ahead with your trundle bed. You can purchase portable air conditioners quite reasonably.

Hi all,

My OH has asthma so air con is not great for him as it’s very drying so we can’t have it - but we also want to use the room for a working out in and for a spare bed so we would still have to get a space saving one anyway.
It was hot all Summer and I didn’t sleep much :0( - mostly because we don’t like a warm bedroom and don’t even put the heating on on Winter, lol. Our downstairs North room was much cooler and bearable so hence why we want it for those hot nights when we can’t sleep ;0)
- good idea re the head board ie could probably make one myself that maybe hinges out or just two panels we hook onto the wall when we need them.
  Murphy would give us loads more floor space though so would be much more versatile. Even if we just bought the mechanism and eventually build a cupboard around it ourselves (most of the prebuilt ones aren’t very nice)
