Lights hung at different heights in same room?

Getting lights fitted tomorrow.

2 glass island pendants, a sputnik style pendant light above dining table and a bay window pendant and wall lights.

The areas with the different pendants are really only 2 metres away from each other all in the one 6 X 5 m room.

Is it OK to have the pendants hung at different heights or should they all be same?

And heights about 90cm above table/island OK?

Choosing pendant lights of different sizes is not a bad thing at all. Opting for an asymmetric decoration brings more character and warmth.

Now, about the light above the table, the average space given between the bottom of the pendants light and to the top of the table surface is between 71 and 91 cm. The size that you have chosen is then more than OK.

Definately go for varied lengths as that will help to highlight the different areas

I think I prefer the footstools and table like that. Do they obscure the view of the tv? What do you think? I'm not sure about the wing chair though, do you have room in the bedroom for it?

Hi kiwi_musings It looks like you're creating a really nice space there and you’ll really benefit from open plan living. My first thought is to use one single pendant – I’ve seen multi pendants used in this situation on the low then the high ceiling before and, in my opinion, it really draws your eye to the imbalance of the pendant heights. This is subject to taste of course, but something like the No.1 pendant in walnut by Tom Raffield not only looks great but would really help to pick out the walnut detail in your kitchen. Personally I wouldn't mix the floor colours - especially when made of the same material. I have a dark wood floor colour throughout my house (except bathroom). The spare bedroom is quite small but if styled in a thoughtful way doesn't have to feel small - even with a dark floor. I like houses that has rooms that flow, rather than clash, as it can feel disjointed with many styles under one roof. For the smaller rooms you could always put down a light coloured rug to lighten the floor colour while maintaining a coherent design. Shannon

Have you considered shutters? They give a real ‘wow’ factor and really make a feature of both rectangular and bay windows. You said your bay window looks out on the back garden. With shutters you can adjust the louvres to allow as little or as much ‘view-through’ into the garden. They would also give the privacy you need in a bedroom, as well as making the room dark enough for sleeping when the louvres are completely closed. You said you’re not changing the structural element of the room or the windows. By having shutters within the apertures, they would not get in the way of any cupboards or other modifications you might eventually make to the room. Another asset of shutters is that it doesn’t matter if windows are at different heights. Having the same product across all windows in a space creates a lovely considered and unified look. Also, when windows are above radiator (as in your square bay) and you have long curtains, you tend to lose heat behind the curtains. As shutters are insulating and fitted above the radiator, they can be used to reflect the radiator heat into your room. In a nutshell, shutters create a lovely aesthetic look in a room. You don’t need to dress the windows in any other way as they are a wow factor in their own right. Shades of white will make the room appear even larger.
