Can a rear exit gas stove be fitted here?

So I'm in the process of renovation my house and am currently working on the living room. It had a old gas fire fitted (Robinson Willey Firegem according to pictures i've found on Google) I have a pre-cast flue and the aperture measures 350mm wide and tall, and 90mm deep, it tapers off as it goes up the wall (I haven't measured this). I really wanted a full wood log burner but that's just not going to be possible for sensible money, so I'm happy to stick with gas for now, but it has to be a stove looking burner.

I'm looking at something like this, it says suitable for pre-cast flue blocks, but says it needs a 5" flue which I have no idea if I have or not.

I've attached pictures of the hole in my wall below if it helps.

Not much help I’m afraid, but have you considered a electric faux wood Burner? I have one and they are dead easy, just plug in. Some of the more expensive ones have a very realistic misting option which does look like real flames. The heat comes from a fan below the unit. Here’s mine, a mid range Dimplex one (about £300).

Not much help regarding the flue etc - but you say that you’d really like a woodburner, but for sensible money...

Do you have a budget? I have two stoves (a Franco Belge multifuel and a Morso gas balanced flue) both would have been hugely expensive brand new, but I bought both from eBay - and probably saved over £1.5k in total. I hadn’t thought about buying second hand until a professional recommended it - there’s very little that can go wrong with a stove and as long as you stick to the main brands, spare parts are really easy to get. Brands to keep an eye out for are Franco Belge, Dovre, and Morso amongst others. You are probably still looking around £500 second hand - so not cheap, but massively cheaper than if new. For both of mine, I called a local fitter who was more than happy to fit and sign off properly.

Original kitchen becomes a utility/laundry room. I'll be doing an single storey extension out to the rear which would be a dining and lounge area with skylights. That rear window and wall would come down to create an open kitchen. What is labelled as the dining room would be a cosy living room with log burning stove. Fireplace in the new kitchen would be turned into a feature; perhaps housing a wine chiller and rack. Other option is to take out the centre wall with the fireplace, but I feel I shouldn't totally remove such original features and I like the idea of having a utility room. Though I should add I am aware of what supporting walls are (especially with fireplaces) and the complications with removing them.

The log burner is in the heart of our home, in a open plan living / dining / cooking space, the warmth reflects on the floorboards and i can drag a chair in front of it to curl up and cosy. I would love to ask any advice on the best type of slow burning logs to buy?

Hi there.. Yes they are bought by the size of the area you need to heat... We lived in the Shetland isles.for 5 years, and was an old craft house. And mostly to heat the hole house.. When it was hot,, it was hit and such a warm and welcoming feature on our most chilly and windy days... But the things is it can also be hard work.. Maybe not as much if you are in a warmer area. We could freely get pallets which helped immensely... And we tried to remove as many nails as we could see.. Otherwise these got caught in the grate at the bottom... But I would still say hard work . We got coal about £10 a bag, peat was the best for heat, but that started to get a little dearer to. All in all we paid about £2500 with the fire and fitting. About 3 years ago now. Didn't regret it at all. But would think twice about having one now.. I ain't getting any younger..

I've gone for an open fire. I also replaced a gas fire. The original fireplace had been ripped out but rather than replace it, I went for a raw look which I like. With an open fire lining the chimney isn't mandatory, so I saved money by not doing that. However I did have to get the chimney uncapped and loose brickwork around the top of the chimney removed ( they just made the chimney stack shorter). Unfortunately once they opened it up, it revealed a lot of collapse down inside the chimney, so the work ended up costing £1500 with scaffolding. I don't regret it though, especially because recent high winds brought down another chimney stack in the street, and mine was easily as ramshackle before the work. As for the work involved in looking after a fire, I have central heating, so I only have to chop wood when I feel like a cosy night by the fire. It doesn't throw out as much heat as a wood burner but it doesn't have to.
