Budget Kitchen remodel idea please.

I recently had an offer accepted on a house.

I'm desperate to change the kitchen but i doubt i'm going to have much left once the purchase is complete.

I plan to repaint the cabinets white. Will repaint the kitchen walls (not sure what color).

Any idea what i can do with the floor? I'd like to change the countertops to what looks like ash wood but i have no idea what that would cost, realistically (First time buyer).

I am also considered having something peninsula like attached to the wall to make a sitting area but not sure if this is going to be an issue walking through from one door to the next.

I've attached pictures of the kitchen.

Budget ideally few hundred pounds but under £1000 is fine.

tl:dr: I want to turn this into a nice kitchen/diner for as little as possible.

All suggestions welcome and appreciated.

To get the most bang for your buck I would leave the cabinets unpainted (because it’s hard to get a great finish as a DIYer and you could end up cheapening the look). Instead I would get rid of the orange tones by painting the walls a grey with a green quality, replacing the worktops with a laminate that looks like stone, a patterned lino will be a nice upgrade for the floor- again choosing grey and stone colours. Lastly I would get rid of the strip light and replace it with inset ceiling spots and under cabinet lights.
Expect to pay £600 to have the worktop done (more expensive as the sink and hob have to be disconnected and reconnected), £300 for fitting lights and £200 for an inexpensive lino and laying. Painting the wall is a job you might well feel confident doing and you shouldn’t spend much on paint.

Thanks Jonathan, that sounds really good, especially floor lino. Would a stone effect look much different to what there is currently? Is there anything/software out there that lets you visualize what the end result would potentially look like? I'm new to this so sorry for any stupid questions. Thanks again

Hello Ca Vow, Yes the Velux window is nice, lots of lovely light! Pics need a more panoramic view to see really.. You could add a pantry as per Karen's plan. I'd still take away the remaining living room wall so it's entirely open into the space and possibly stick to low level cupboards for food storage. Keeping the kitchen roughly where it is situated, means that tv and sitting would be at the other end of the living room. So you keep cooking and dining together so to speak. Another idea might be to have two galley style opposite rather than a U shape configuration. Moving sink round to wall other side of bathroom so plumbing together. With oven opposite it. Thus you could have a wall to ceiling pantry cupboard or double height fridge enclosed as a cupboard style on that wall where currently the sink is situated. Then if you open the entire wall to living room, you could extend the galley worktop (new sink side) and even extend that to accommodate an eating area that folds away when you don't want it... : )) Roughly speaking.. View if you were standing with your back to your fridge/pantry : )) You could house the fridge in a pantry style cupboard.... Think deVOL or Plain English... Have beautiful free standing appliances... Ideas..... Smeg Range dual fuel 60 or 90. Smeg streamline dishwasher, Dualit toaster and architect kettle.. Buy cheaper cabinet shells... and put lovely doors! Handless.. or cup handles.. Paint matt colour or lovely wooden doors like Bert and May Kitchens... Choose lovely taps... Have a lovely worktop... The watermark collection Zen, London or Elan Vital, Kohler articulated tap in Nickel or brass... Have a pot filler... Make the kitchen beautiful with these shiny things.... Celebrate the open plan and let everyone see what a fabulous kitchen you'll have... No need to hide with integrated appliances.. : ))

Hi franparmenter, there are lots of things you can do! For example, changing the depths and heights of cabinetry can make the kitchen storage bigger or reduce the depth and height to give more free space in a small kitchen. With so many options in sizes now available you’re no longer constrained by one single size. Pocket doors, which slide back into the unit, either as a bi-fold option or a whole option, allow easy access to units but without imposing on floor space. Use mirrors and reflective surfaces to maximise light. Go for integrated appliances to streamline the look. Hi Alice, you're on the right track! The layout of your flat is quite rigid and there isn't much that can be done within reasonable effort (and price). You might also consider removing the wall to the stair and moving the first steps towards the toilet. This will further enlarge the space. Hiring a building company would of course increase the cost by 15-20% but if you don't have any experience in construction and project management, it is by far the most sensible thing to do. For a price tag, even a rough estimate, we would need quite a few more details about the existing house, furniture, finishes. I think the layout needs improving anyway. The stove is very close to the corner, so I'd definitely want that moved more towards the right. Which means you'd have to have a narrow cabinet to the right of the stove. If it was my kitchen and wanted to do it on a budget, I'd check out Ikea or DIY kitchens. I'd probably go for tall cabinets along the wall across from the window. In those tall cabinets an integrated fridge freezer, microwave/oven and loads of storage. You could then lose the upper cabinets. I'd also want corner cabinets with clever pull out storage and drawers wherever possible. If you really, really, really want a breakfast bar, you could then have stools instead of a cabinet under the countertop, where the microwave and freezer/fridge (?) are now.

I think you just need to look at some images to find a look you think works with your current kitchen and then replicate that look
