Advice for decorating, please

I recently had an offer accepted on a house and looking for advice on how to decorate the living room.

I want to strip the wall paper and paint the room something warm and neutral so the room isn't too dark.

What color would you suggest?

I can't afford to change the floor so the wall colors would need to suit/match/complement.

The TV is currently in an awkward place, I'm thinking of putting the TV just above the fireplace, any thoughts on this?

The previous owner was happy leaving the sofas behind. It doesn't show in the picture but to the left of the sofa, there's a door to the kitchen so i have to be conscious of a pathway.

Any idea what else i can do with this space to rejuvenate it?

Hi Demilade, congratulations on your offer being accepted, hopefully you'll get into your house soon.
ti bring some light and simplicity into the room I'd suggest to paint it light grey with warm undertones. you'd need to check few samples in the room before you can choose the right one. some greys can look greener then the other depending on the lighting. I'd suggest to look at the colours similar to farrow and ball skimming stone, purbeck stone, pavilion grey, ammonite. to add an interest and liven the space up, you can add some pattern and colour. mustard, brass, yellow, but orange, ochre would go nice with the grey and will light and warm up the space.
some people don't lime to have tv above the fireplace because it's would be quite high up. a mirror would be a good choice above the fireplace, it would also bounce some light back to the room from the window. you can try to put the tv to the right of the fireplace. ikea besta has a nice tv bench, with a lot of storage and it come in high gloss white and would reflect the light too.
to finish everything is good to add a big leafy plant where the tv is now and some prints. you can create an interesting gallery wall with some pictures, photos, art and prints.

Because the sofas are big heavy and dark I agree that you need to lighten up this room. I wouldn't have additional furniture because I think it looks full already but I might swap your little table lamp for a standard lamp to you have a light that is the same height as the TV. I also think your mirror is undersized, it should hang portrait to make the room seem taller - a round mirror would also work. I would get a white dining table. The mahogany trunk seems to obscure the view of the fireplace- perhaps a lower table should be better. I would also get an oversized houseplant. I don't mind the fireplace. I think you can put any colour on the walls and I don't think it has to be neutral but you should replace the curtains with much paler-perhaps even white. I think one of the reasons for replacing the curtains is the now slightly dated pattern. Perhaps put pattern in art or cushions so it can be changed more regularly. I like the rug but it does dictate your decorating choices- could it go in another room? If it can I think that your instinct is right that a large pale textured rug would be comfy and visually break up the dark tones of the sofas and floor. Lastly I would add a throw and a couple of cushions to make the sofas less imposing, add pattern and break up their darkness.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. we couldn't make a decision so went with a quick creamy white paint. I'm not sure what I think of it yet or whether it's because the ceiling and woodwork are brilliant white still? Should the ceiling be the same colour? Any suggestions to improve?? I think a feature wall would be good. Do you think the farrow and ball cornforth white would be ok for maybe the fireplace wall and window wall or the back wall maybe? The 2 seater is going in our extension and I'm thinking a single arm chair in grey or cream with a footstool would be better for space and comfortable for all the newborn feeds and long nights ahead. The other end of the room will be a dining table. Again, I'm yet to find one so if you have suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. It's not the biggest space and would have to be no longer than 160 or an extending one. I like the wood/black metal look or wood/cream- love the darker wood top (see pics) and a bench one side would be great. I gave been looking for a while and every time I see one I like it's just too big. Thanks again x

I would say it is definitely some softer furnishings you need to give you area a softer and more inviting feel. I would go for a door mat/runner for the floor and add a little colour up on the wall. Probably changing the mirror above the console for a nice canvas and leaving the mirrors opposite to help with the illusions of space and to bounce the light (3 would be better here if that's possible - 3's the magic number). I would also consider a plant or flowers on the console. They are inviting and make people feel happier so a great touch for the hallway (where we invite people in). Green also helps literally, to breath life into the space. Best of luck - do post pics with what you go with :)

Jonathan, I was considering changing the flooring to carpet once I have some extra pennies but a rug will do brilliant in the mean time
