Painting uPVC window frames
Comments (77)@Tani H-S Most professionals that refurbish uPVC windows will spray. You need the right equipment, you must prepare the surfaces properly before applying and most importantly you need the right paint (that properly bonds to the surface, has UV protection and thermal movement elasticity). If you don't use a professional and you have problems, you can always get a quote for new windows from YES Glazing Solutions - our windows are available in over 200 RAL colours! https://www.yesglazingsolutions.co.uk...See MorePOLL: Single, double or triple glazed?
Comments (55)chanti1, my grandparents used to have massive condensation problems with their double glazing as it was added as an afterthought, it had about a 4 inch gap and was not sealed so they would have to keep cloths in the gap to mop it all up. In my parents house there were a couple of windows prone to this problem between the panes - caused when the seal on the double glazed units failed. Because you can't get to it the result is eventually mould. The units had to be changed which to my mind seems drastic and wasteful. There should be a way of removing, cleaning and resealing units on site. Of course condensation happens with single glazing all the time. Where I live now we get condensation on the outside of the window at night. Air conditioning indoors and extreme humidity outside with night time temperatures still in the high twenties centigrade does that....See MoreBedroom ventilation
Comments (4)I know you can get 'locks' on sash windows so the window can be open a little but nobody can push it up etc. Wonder if they would work on this door ? Not sure what they're call but worth a google ! Maybe ask an independent glazier to take a look/call....See MoreHow do sash windows work?
Comments (11)I've just had timber double glazed sashes put in. They don't open as fully as original victorian ones, which open from the top, the bottom or both. I had to choose either top opening or bottom opening. I chose bottom, which is apparently unusual but my windows are huge, over 6' high, and i wanted to be able to access the opening. they came with brass stops fitted which unless you unscrew them prevent the window opening more than a couple of inches. I get this for security but it's a bit of a faff if you just want to fling open windows to air a room. The other thing I had to choose was the split of top to bottom, on terms of the size of the panes. to do this I looked for original windows on my street to copy. because I couldn't find any I accepted 60/40 split. Then once it was too late found some originals, which were 50/50. it doesn't really matter because 99% of houses on my street have upvc anyway and they're all different but I wish I'd gone with my instinct to have 50/50. my only other advice is to go with a local timber window specialist with a good website and no hard sell tactics. And once they've sent you their written quote, challenge it. There's always room for negotiation. I just emailed back and asked 'is that the very best you can do?' . The quote was immediately reduced from 12k to 9.5k. Blackthorn Timber Windows BTW, if you are in the North East or thereabouts....See MoreJonathan
