What colour furniture goes well with mahogany?

Our house has mahogany throughout, fireplace, staircase, skirting boards etc. What colour furniture would you put with it?

Sorry if this sounds basic...
I have loads of wood in this place - mahogany windows, different colour wood flooring, bare architraves, etc - and I've been using a Pocket Colour Wheel (they're a couple of quid on eBay or Amazon) to work out complementary and split complementary colours.
My mahogany's base is red-orange - the complementary colour would be blue-green (e.g. teal), split is green & blue, triad is yellow-green & blue-violet, etc. (There's instructions on it.)

We would need to see pics. Depending on the look you are going for and how the wood looks, it might be best to paint the wood? We had mahogany staircase and window frame in our kitchen and we painted them recently

Thank you all for your input. I need to perfect the art of closing one eye to block out other colours! I was not good at this! I think you need bigger sample cards than I used. I couldn't paint on the wall as there's currently wallpaper there. My local F&B stockist suggested Shaded White which is a nice, "safe" neutral I think and as the room is quite dark, it seems to work better than the greyer shades I was trying. I guess sometimes what you want is different from what will actually work best and Shaded White seems a good compromise. I'm delighted to have got input from you and I'll post some pictures later of items I'm considering using in the room in the hope of some more advice.

Have you considered Benjamin Moore Barren Plain? It’s a near neutral colour which sits just into the Yellow Hue Family. (See the colorography below by The Land of Color). It sits well with the richness of the mahogany colours. But this colour would need to be considered & sampled within your space in order to see the effect of light upon it. This is because all low chroma (near neutral) colours from this section of the color wheel are prone to shifting purple in imbalanced light. They aren’t purple and don’t have purple ‘undertones’, it’s just a phenomenon of light and context. However in a reasonably balanced light, they will look just as their color notations in the colorography describes them. Worth a thought,,, Good Luck with your colour quest! 🌈

Cashmere changes colour throughout the day depending on the light so i would keep all units the same colour. Personally not a lover of American fridge freezers especially in smaller kitchens. They seem to draw your eye to them as they are so bulky. Depending on the brand you will need to allow ventilation around it and also space each side if you intend to have tall units.

Hi Helen, I think gold tones like brass go well with Mahogany. So perhaps units with brass legs and marble tops (black / white). Navy and light pinks also work (Although Navy may not go with the green wall colour). If you love the Mahogany then worth getting furniture to match but if you don't you could get furniture you love and suits your style and paint the mahogany to a colour you love (if you can. Not sure if you rent). Don't restrict yourself. I hope this helps.

Thanks very much for this, I hadn't thought of those ideas, we own the house and the mahogany suits the house, however we don't want mahogany furniture, I love the idea of working with brass, which we actually have in our bathroom and kitchen too so this will tie in well

Would you consider painting some of the wood? The dado rail and architrave round the doors could be painted the same colour as the walls (love that green!) or white, and a white painted fireplace always gives a smart classic look. Love the staircase. That way there is less “fighting” between wood colours. Here’s what I mean

We've been tempted to paint over the mahogany, it would be a huge job as all of the downstairs woodwork is mahogany, so we decided to embrace it! it's certainly something to think about though

If you want to neutralize the orangey-red tones in the mahogany, and it sounds like maybe that is what you are seeking since you don't want more of it and you have considered painting it, then you will not want to pair it with a complimentary color, like greens and blues. The blue-green colors (complimentary) will actually accentuate the orange-y red tones. If you are seeing a lighter feel in general, then you will want to use light neutral paint colors that have undertones that are adjacent on the color wheel, like a creamy white with a salmon undertone or a beige with a slight pink undertone. In your textiles, you may want to play with the complimentary colors, but by placing the complimentary color right next to the wood, it will enhance the woods undertones that you probably aren't enthusiastic about. Agree on the brass tones, but look to the new brass tones and finishes. If you get too brassy or too shiny/laminated you may end up getting an outdated feel look and not something fresh and current.

Remember, if you decide to paint, prime a large section of your wall BEFORE putting any samples up. I recommend a 4x4 square. Then test one color at a time in a 2x2 square inside that primed area. When selecting your wall colors, narrow your choices to 3-4 and prioritize them by your favorites. As far as coordinating woods that are not mahogany. I am a big believer in varying your wood tones and mixing them. To successfully mix woods you need to look at the variation of color in the mahogany itself and choose a wood tone from those variations.. You may find that there are some deep chocolate tones and striations in there. I would use those to add wood into your room. Even if the mahogany doesn't have a lot of variation, I am thinking a deep espresso tone or a chocolately walnut would work well with the mahogany. Another pro also advised to use metal and marble. These would be beautiful and would have a classic look.

Thank you Paradigm Interiors, I think the espresso/walnut tones could work really well, I also like the idea of having beige walls with a pink undertone, we're always getting compliments on the green accent wall and how well it goes with the mahogany though and it was an idea I stole from the farrow and ball website! The link you added is helpful for putting together ideas for painting our dining room, thank you ? lots of information to go on here!

Deep blue looks great with dark woods and is pantone colour of the year, looks very regal. Or alternatively if you want a completely different look as suggested previously paint the wood to either a lighter grey, or white in a satin finish and then perhaps a taupe palette which would be light and bright.
