Hi there, I feel like I constantly try pick your wonderful brains for ideas and never give anything back because interior design clearly isn’t my thing ? but I have turned into the person I never wanted to be with extra space in my house! Oldest child left for uni in the summer which has allowed us a bit of a rejig of space and to finally get all the kids stuff out of the living room - yay! But now I have a big dead space im my living room that I don’t know what to do with. We already have a dining kitchen and a study so have no need to use it for a table or a desk. Do I just need to get a couch to pop in the space facing the other couch? And if so what kind of couch would match in? Nb the orange couch and the piano will also be heading to the knackers yard and the orange lights are being replaced For a slightly more grown up feel ? thanks

You can ditch the orange couch every day for me but what a shame the piano is going. Although you've got the space in that lovely room for a baby grand if you're so inclined!

My twopenneth - could you switch the sofa 'ends' around so the chaise bit is in front of the French doors, allowing a nicer flow into the garden? With the raised back at the other end you could put a sofa table behind. This would create more of a separation between your main seating area and old 'orange sofa' area. There, I'd consider a gorgeous armchair, bookcase and floor lamp to create a reading (or music listening ?) corner. You could bring your drawer unit over (the one with the ape lamp on) instead of a new bookcase and then centre your TV in the alcove it's currently in (can't see what type of unit it's placed on atm).
However, I'd also be tempted to put in a fabulous cocktail bar (mange tout Rodney! )in said corner and party like there's no tomorrow!!!

Can I suggest you use any large mirror and then on either side add some clusters of picture and artwork. Or you could add two matching dresser/ shelf things either side. The White on white makes it a very very blank canvas, I think you need to add structure and texture.

Its sounds like your new home has a lot of potential! I personally would keep the chimney as a feature as it adds character. You could have a sofa against the wall with the stairs and one against the top wall and a rug in the middle. You could also have a tv on either the left or right hand side of the red mark. I do think shelving is a good idea for a bit of storage, ornaments, plants, photos which brings a homely/warm and lived in feel to your home. https://cultartfusion.com/collections/furniture

Hi Dave, If you can have it made, then it's very easy to incorporate what you want. Two desks or one longer to accommodate two - doors to cover the desk area to hide permanent office equipment or not ... etc etc etc. It will need to be very personal to you and how you like to set up a desk area. You can then work around the other details to make it work within you living room. Buying pre-made furniture for this might be quite difficult, though to incorporate it into your living space, fit nicely, look good and to use practically might be more tricky.

I really like your space and what you’ve done with it!

It looks like no one else’s; individualistic.

I agree with Jules re the piano.

My great passion is music, so obviously I would also urge you not to rid of the piano, if indeed that is your intention.

I do actually like the orange sofa. Keep it :)

The room appears a little bit dark but I don’t really notice dead space. Maybe that’s just in the photo.

Consider investing in an oversized rug to zone the large sofa seating area.

And have you thought about painting the fireplace?

For all of you sad about the piano it can no longer be tuned ? and it has finally got to the stage where even tone death me can’t listen to it! And as none of us have a musical bone in our body it’s probably not worth replacing! I’m keeping all those bat photos as we have a bar in the converted garage which I night turn some attention to soon but it does also get used for a lot of teenage gatherings ? the study has all the books and a comfy reading couch not that it ever feels like I have time to use! I‘m goingto try turning the couch around over the weekend and have a shufty about with the stuff and take It from there! Thank you all ever so much and if you’re ever in Aberdeen I’ve a well stocked bar you are welcome to raid ?? Ps the room is never exactly flooded with light - I blame the foot thick exterior walls but I don’t mind cosy and cave like ?
