Any ideas for our lounge & master bedroom?!
Comments (13)Hi David. An exciting new project you have there! Here are my initial thoughts: Living room: I would lose the warm tones and pattern, as I think this is what is making it feel dated for you, and introduce some grey and white, with possibly a touch of petrol blue. Shutter style blinds may be nice for your windows - you can get well designed yet affordable slatted blinds that resemble shutters these days. Again, I would stick to white and keep it fresh. I would build in a chimney breast for your TV, and how about a modern style log burner? Prints work well on cushions, so if you did want to re-introduce some pattern into a more modern setting, I would mix geometric printed cushions with simple plain ones to break them up. There are lots out there at the moment. If you wanted to keep the oak floors, you could look into sanding them back and grey-washing for a modern feel or indeed keep them oak. Just by sanding them back they will begin to feel a bit more modern. Note - oak changes colour over time, so if in direct sunlight it will start to go a warmer colour. Bedroom: Remove arch if you can, which would open the space up quite a bit. Perhaps the curtains could go and you could go for a fabric roman blind instead - this would soften the windows a little, yet still feel modern. Plain white waffle bedlinen is always a good move, and if you like a pop of colour, layer it with a throw and blanket, as well as three - four cushions, stacked in front of the pillows. This could introduce a little colour for you. If you stick to cooler colours, you could keep the oak floor if you wanted to, as it may balance out nicely. Can't quite see your pendant light in the shots, but perhaps white origami style pendants and lamps with soft glows would be nice. Keep it fresh, yet soft as this is the room you want to relax in. Greys and tonal colours work well in bedrooms. Not sure if you were planning on keeping your furniture or not, the black could work well for a modern setting, but if you were, you could look at white or grey gloss styles as options. This will keep it looking clutter-free with streamlined pieces. Hope this helps a little. Fi...See MoreMessy Playroom Transformation
Comments (5)Hello! I would say to start with a serious decluttering session! Clear the window cills. Try to get rid of toys that are not played with anymore... maybe a 1/4 or even a 1/3 of what you have at the moment. The thing is, kids are always playing with the same stuff and too many toys is not helping them to choose and decide what to play with! I tidy our playroom by type: stationary somewhere, board games, Lego stuff accessible to kids... box for pens, tray for paper... Also, it looks like you have several little tables in there! How about to get just a decent size coffee table, so it’s the right height for kids, and another normal table, not too big for craft, when you play with them etc... You could use a wall to display their school work, art, chalk board... It still gets messy ! but it’s quicker to tidy up if everything has a place!...See MoreHelp! Messy shoes/coats cupboard under stairs ;(
Comments (9)Many thanks for your comments. Getting the kids (& husband...) to at least put their shoes and coat IN the cupboard is already an every day battle. It won’t be at all possible to ask them to put those somewhere else. My shoes and cost are already in my wardrobe to make space; but realistically, I cannot expect them to do the same... I have installed 2 motion-activated lights in the cupboard. However with the coats in the way, it is only partially illuminating the shoes. The main problem is access to the shoes racks. I have seen pull out shoes racks, but it seems to be more for side cupboard of stairs (see pictures). I never saw anything for « front » under stairs cupboard, when coat and shoes are on top of each other. I am happy to rip out and replace this cupboard with something else (eg asking a carpenter for a specific design) if anyone as suggestions/ideas :) I cannot think of any practical solution... :(...See MoreUpdate my living Room. Comments (34)Tracy. You’ve been getting a lot of good advice but I just thought I’d add a few thoughts. When I look at your current set up I see a classic and oriental feeling. I think this is timeless and just needs a refresh. Your sofas are a classic design and I think that recovering them in a more neutral fabric would work. But I think your curtains are really fresh and modern and it would be good to really layer on lots of cushions to tie in with the design. See attached other fabrics from Villa Nova which complement but don’t match your existing design. Loads of these layered up on a neutral linens effect background would look great and could be changed over time. For your walls, I actually don’t think dark blue is right. It’s very on trend right now and can look great in a smaller cosy room but your room is spacious and I’d personally keep that feeling of light. I know you don’t like wallpaper but a pale ivory type paper with a subtle colour or texture could look really elegant. I actually like your mahogany style furniture. It’s the tv stand I’d change along with maybe freshening up your lampshades. Minnie’s choices look great. Alternatively, some blue and white China lamp bases would look wonderful and pick out the Asian themes in your furniture. See photos attached and good luck...See MoreE D
