How do I make my bookcase less boring?
Comments (27)For me the trick is defiantly positioning lay some down and stand some up, add some personal decorative pieces to break up the books Play with height and groupings of things maybe put something tall with 2 smaller things add some pictures or even those little boards with sayings on. Mostly though I think it's important too add some beautiful things that mean something to you and incorporate them with your books....See MoreAnyone got any good ideas for making an ex council house look cool?
Comments (61)I live in the Scottish Borders and three years ago there was a government incentive to externally insulate the houses. Due to the construction of the houses (poured concrete they couldn’t have cavity wall insulation ) . The difference to the heating bills is unbelievable but the look of the house is fabulous as there was new render put on new window sills and down pipes .i agree with the comment that just doing one house would stand out like a sore thumb but it just takes one to start the ball rolling . Maybe speak to your neighbours and they may want to do the same . All the houses in my street had the cladding and it has transformed the look of the street . I have since revamped my lounge and kitchen. There was nothing wrong with the kitchen cupboards so they where painted ,new work tops and sink . I did have a breakfast bar that took up a lot of room which I have replaced with a glass table . My next project is my bedroom which is getting refitted with new wardrobes and draws . Ex local authority houses are well built and have big rooms , they are worth buying as you can do so much with them ,I have bigger cupboards than the rooms that are in some new builds . This is my kitchen, it is so much lighter and more space . The back board is the same as the work top , so no tiles to grout ....See MoreHow can I make my Edwardian house front look nicer?
Comments (16)Personally I think that the issue is that the pebbledashed section is too plain and this is exacerbated by the fact that the roof here is higher than the original plan. In my opinion the solution is to create some visual interest in this area. If both you and your neighbour is replacing the porch a taller version might help. Personally I think the pebbledash looks like a lower quality product than the rest of the house and painting it would help lift it (as long as the neighbour also want to do it as half done would look worse). Ideally I would put a tall thin sash style window in the pebbledashed section but I recognise this might be inconvenient inside the house- but it could be faked by adding a window surround to the outside to match the stone on the bay....See MoreHow can I make my living room look less cluttered?
Comments (16)Liking the eclectic look! You do have a fair amount of furniture in the space, but I think with the look you’re going for it can work well, its just learning how to work with it. I don’t think it looks cluttered at all. At present, besides the furniture, the room is fairly simple and so your eyes are mostly drawn to all the furniture. I’m thinking if you add in some accessories here and there, it will help to create interest and change the focus. It’s a great way to tie everything in together without using an area rug. For example, adding some feature wall art above the sofa, whether that be one stand alone piece or a cluster of a few. Or how about adding a nice red throw over the sofa to tie in with the red chair? Adding plants/flowers on top of furniture are always great options as others have suggested. Your oval footstool is a lovely piece. Maybe you could add a tray on it with some accessories on? In terms of creating more storage, maybe you could have a think about open shelves and find some interesting ways to display your items. But the bookcase is lovely too! I suppose it really depends how much storage you need. They’re just some initial thoughts. I won’t be offended if you don’t like!...See MoreGrumpi Von Grump
