Renovating Design Dilemma Exteriors

Anyone used Millboard for exterior cladding of a house?

Weighing up whether to use Cedar as a cladding material (coated in Sioo:x) or to try and use Millboard instead. Anyone have any experiences - positive or negative?

Not heard of Millboard previously so I looked it up and it seems to be intended for decking.

Cedar is good for external cladding, or you could also consider Larch, but both will need some protection and maintenance of course, although I knew a builder who liked using Nordic Larch for cladding extensions and he said it needed very little to protect it from the elements,

Seems to cost a lot more than regular composite cladding.. Why millboard?

Exploring plans to have a first floor extension built on top of existing 10 yr old brick built kitchen with flat roof. House is 1950's hand-made brick and I'd like to have something other than bricks on the first floor. Love the New England style of cladding but don't want wood. The side extension with mono-pitch roof will also be clad - I think. Anybody used cement cladding? What are the drawbacks/advantages? Advice welcome, please.

I live in the Scottish Borders and three years ago there was a government incentive to externally insulate the houses. Due to the construction of the houses (poured concrete they couldn’t have cavity wall insulation ) . The difference to the heating bills is unbelievable but the look of the house is fabulous as there was new render put on new window sills and down pipes .i agree with the comment that just doing one house would stand out like a sore thumb but it just takes one to start the ball rolling . Maybe speak to your neighbours and they may want to do the same . All the houses in my street had the cladding and it has transformed the look of the street . I have since revamped my lounge and kitchen. There was nothing wrong with the kitchen cupboards so they where painted ,new work tops and sink . I did have a breakfast bar that took up a lot of room which I have replaced with a glass table . My next project is my bedroom which is getting refitted with new wardrobes and draws . Ex local authority houses are well built and have big rooms , they are worth buying as you can do so much with them ,I have bigger cupboards than the rooms that are in some new builds . This is my kitchen, it is so much lighter and more space . The back board is the same as the work top , so no tiles to grout .

Hi Dave, Wow! Sounds like you've got a lot of great ideas! Having been through a very similar process recently I would highly recommend you employ a designer to create you some 3D renders, so you can see exactly what the different options would look like! We bought a very ugly house (due to really wanting to be in a certain location / village) and were desperate to improve the curb appeal but weren't sure what to do for the best and it's such a big and expensive decision!! I was really surprised by how little it costs (especially in comparison to how much the changes will cost) and for us it was totally invaluable to actually be able to see exactly what the different options would look like in high quality colour images. We used Gina from Create Perfect (on here) and she helped us decide how to resize a couple of windows and what colour to paint them and how to change our front door! We're not finished yet (!!!) and have only changed one of the windows so far but already we're delighted with the result and for a few hundred pounds, it has saved a lot of stress and uncertainty! I've attached a few pics of before, the 3D render that helped us decide on size and colour of the new windows and how we look so far with one of them already changed.
