Budget Options for a Humphrey Munson look - flooring & lighting

We are trying to make due with a very outdated (80s) kitchen because there is so much to update in the house, so the kitchen will have to wait. Currently it has vintage appliances, a brown tiled worktop, and worst of all, damaged cork flooring.

I am looking forward to getting creative with paint to make things last a bit longer. However, I have been admiring the gorgeous kitchens by Humphrey Munson... and I wondered whether there is any good advice on sourcing similar, more budget-friendly flooring. I am particularly drawn to their natural stone or limestone flooring.

I also love their simple light fixtures, although I suspect I will also need to look for a budget-friendly alternative.

What I love about Humphrey Munson is that their kitchens manage to be classic as well as modern... and neutral as well as tasteful. Any ideas for capturing this look with quite a tight budget would be very gratefully received.

You can grab loads of different lighting options online - John Lewis, Etsy, etc. If you really want something preloved then reclaim yards are a good bet plus it's fun rummaging through the goods. View our kitchens here

The Architect takes the client's brief and instructions, prepares feasibility designs , cost estimates and makes Planning and Building Regulation Applications, negotiates with Planners & Building Control Officers on behalf of the clientdesigns the whole building/extension, specifies the materials to be used in the construction, specifies the quality and method of construction, provides detailed, dimensioned drawings to Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, etc etc, prepares tender documents for the whole project, checks potential contractors, invites tenders, reports and advises on received tenders, prepares Contract documents, administers the Building Contract, issues Certificates for Payments at appropriate times, inspects the work as it proceeds to ensure it conforms with the Contract, agrees Final Accounts with Contractors and issues Final Certificates to clients etc for payment, makes six month inspections, issues instructions to contractors to make good defects etc etc Interior Designers are sometimes, but not invariably, engaged as part of the Professional Team to advise on the design of the interiors of buildings, including colour schemes, fabrics, fittings and furniture, estimating costs, sourcing fittings, furniture and fabrics including floor and wall coverings. They specialise in these aspects of the building project but do not offer the extent and quality of services as offered by Architects who are normally regarded as the leaders of any design team and who are required to have considerably more training, qualifications and expertise in all aspects of building projects than Interior Designers have or need. I am unaware of the minimum qualification necessary to call oneself an 'Interior Designer' and would be interested to learn that. Some Interior Designers offer more than the normal service as mentioned above and if a client prefers to take that option that is their right to do so. Some draughtsmen do the same but I wouldn't recommend that course of action in this specific instance unless the particular Interior Designer/Draughtsmen shows himself/herself well equipped, experienced and qualified to do the job as well as an Architect.

Latest update, I have decided to head for the front of the curve - surely pine will be coming back into fashion soon and I’ll have an original! So we’re not changing the kitchen units, nor painting them, just focusing on worktops, walls, floors. My question now concerns flooring and wall colour. We will be putting in a square edge marble effect worktop, with an upstand, and the sink is being replaced by a quartz one. Where the window and wall underneath have been removed we are extending the worktop to the end of where the original external wall comes to, and should be able to put some very slim cabinets underneath, they will be light grey. Im looking for ideas regarding wall colour - I’m thinking blue/green but quite undecided, maybe I should go off-white. Any ideas gratefully appreciated. tia Stephanie

I suggest finding a nice local carpenter to help with cabinets etc. They will be able to come up with imaginative ways of upgrading and using as much of your own things as possible. I had an ok but boring Magnet kitchen with laminate doors. I wanted new doors and after spending an entire morning in the local franchise of Dream Doors, they eventually refused to come out and look at my kitchen when I said that my budget was under £5k. I priced up new doors online and then found a local carpenter. When he came round, I explained what I wanted and that my real dream was to have an “in-frame” look. He laughed, told me to scrap my ideas of buying new doors and instead he made entire new fronts that look a million times better than anything I could get off the shelf. It was also a fraction of the price!! My kitchen isn’t perfect (i find it too dark. - but that’s another story and not to do with the carpenter!!) - however it’s high quality, completely bespoke and an absolute bargain! I love those lights too. When I did my hall, I was lusting after some from Jim Lawrence but in the end I made my own version - I bought an antique brass ceiling rose, lamp holder and vintage style flex from Art Deco Emporium (about £16) and an Ikea glass shade (about £10). Total cost was under £30!!
