Which neutral colour to use for walls and carpet?

Hi, we've just bought a house and need to move in asap. The carpet throughout the house is very dated. We are thinking about placing new carpet and getting the walls painted. I'm thinking of going with the same carpet and same colour walls throughout the house, something neutral. Which colours would you recommend? thanks!

Hi, congratulations on your new home purchase !

Neutral for the entire home is a good idea if you want a consistent feeling and flow through the house, however I would consider looking at something that has a tad of interest or texture so that it doesn't become something you might get bored with? Also, I would personally try to avoid going down the grey route for an entire home, it can become over-powering.

I have recently worked with wool carpets and depending on the rest of the style of your home I would highly recommend this - the have a lovely loop-style texture and a great range of neutral colours that are really versatile.

They are also very comfortable and good for insulation if 100% wool.

Here is one I have used previously, close-up and as a normal view which only subtly shows the different texture.

The wall colour here is Natural Hessian by Dulux, and it compliments it well in all lights.

Hi there! Congrats on your new home!

As above, it's always an idea to go neutral for the base (carpet & walls) so that after you've lived in the house for a while you know what pops of colour/texture/tones you want to add. It also makes the house feel more 'yours' and you can take your time to get it exactly how you want!

The first thing to think about is the tone of neutral you want - more blue toned or more warm toned? It also does depend on your house, I'm assuming you're in the UK which is normally fairly drab, so I'd be careful with anything too blue toned as it could make the house feel somewhat cold.

Hello, I'd love to upload a pic but the app is not letting me at the moment. It's a hall and was thinking the bottom half of it (it's already divided with skirting, creating a "panel" look) should be ochre and the top one in a light neutral (UK, not much natural light). The carpet on stairs will be an ochre / old gold colour. I do like the idea of inverting the colours: lighter for the bottom panel and ochre for the rest, but I'm afraid of it being too much ochre and eventually i would have to paint ochre upstairs too. The bottom panel is about 1 metre high. Thanks.

Your colour scheme sounds lovely and by the looks of it, the project is coming along really well! The best way to consider how much grey to use is probably to consider lighting (daytime and in the evening). If you have lots of natural sunlight and artificial lighting for the evening then I'm sure you're onto a winner with the grey! Good luck!

Colour matching the walls to be the same as the wardrobes will help them be less dominant in the room, this will also make the room feel bigger. If you want to feature the cabinet instead - go for something either diversely different or several shades of the same colour, but darker, to make it stand out... hope that helps !

Lovely choice of cupboards. The digital images suggests there are undertones of yellow in that colour so you could match with this or contrast depending on what look you want.

Thought these images suggested ways of working with that colour (though this is a little more in the pink side) but it illustrates how you could make the cupboards stand out. Also created a colour pallete of other colours that felt would match the cupboard - a mix of neutrals and some a bit bolder (perhaps for accessories?!)

Also just to add on the walls, check where your windows are in the room and notice the light you get coming in, depending on direction of your home, you might never get a strong sunlight through and this can impact how colours look too! Have fun!
