should you have the same wood throughout?

For instance, my hall flooring is a light oak, and I want to use a teak or oak in the bathroom that comes off of it. Does that matter or ideally would it match to help the decor of the house flow?

In theory yes aim for the same wood colour hue ... but if you wandered around my house there’s a bunch of things I’ve had for years that don’t match - no ones ever run out screaming 😱 !!

The same colour flooring would make your house look bigger and part of a comprehensive design. Mixing different wood colours never looks great TBH.

I would recommend porcelain tiles as they are hard wearing, low maintenance & easy clean. Natural stone is another option but factor in future maintenance. I would also consider UFH, having no radiators gives you more options for room layouts when all walks are free. If you prefer a wooden floor, go for a quality engineered timber. Regards Karl

Colour is always a very personal matter - to express my own opinion, however, I would opt for white (or just off white) for architraves, skirtings, coving ceiling and any picture/dado rails every time. This will, "frame" your wall and make the chosen wall colour really stand out. Wrt the doors - I think you have more options here. A matching white will still look great; picking your original light grey or, eve, a darker shade could also work (difficult to know without seeing the grey!), but care should be taken. White would still be the safest option (and is a classic - see below), but is not the only route. As another idea - if your doors are panel doors, you could think of going two tone with white and grey to just accentuate the shapes of the frames, but you would need a delicate touch to get the look right

Hi Gabby, I've chosen trees that will be low maintenance. The Acer silhouette is a narrow tree and grows to about 4 metres which is enough to provide screening without spreading or being too over-powering. I'm not sure about the Arbutus, I think it is going to be a few years before I have to think about pruning but I'm hoping it will grow upwards rather than outwards. If it does need pruning I'll speak to my neighbours and offer to cut their side of it. The other thing I considered was the benefits of evergreen trees, not only do they provide privacy all year round but they also won't cause alot of additional trips to the recycling centre in autumn to dispose of the leaves.

This is what the door people sent me as an example of Chartwell Green. Personally, I like it, its timeless, but I think it will look too shiny and plasticy. Its so hard to make a desicion without seeing the product in real life! You can see from my earlier photo that I went for Chartwell Green feel, although it came out a lot lighter than I was expecting. I used Little Greene. These are the colours Ive been given to select from Again, black might look good because the window sills are black, but it might look to shiny and black and plasticy! I certainly think cream on the inside, also the external colour on the door return side.

Having the same flooring throughout is more cohesive to design however, I've seen it done 🤷‍♂️ at the end of the day no one desperate to use the loo will refuse to use it because of mismatched floor colours.

I'd always advise to determine what matters to you more. Would you rather that the bathroom looks just as you would like it to by using the teak/oak wood so when you close the door in the room it is it's own special space? Or, would you much prefer to have a flowing floor throughout your home? Personally, when it comes to bathrooms, as it is generally a room that has it's door closed - I wouldn't compromise design and feel in that room just to have the floor coverings matching throughout ... I say go for it on this one! Hope it turns out as you imagined.

Would you consider alternatives to wood? Wood-effect porcelain tiles are actually really convincing and much more practical than wood in a wet environment where wood is likely to deteriorate quickly. In terms of which wood to choose and where, we would suggest trying to include it as an accent rather than have too much everywhere.
