Paint colour for Kitchen cupboards and tiles?
Hi, I am looking to update our kitchen a little by painting the kitchen cupboards and tiles. We're first time buyers and spent the majority of our budget upgrading other essential parts of the house so cant afford to replace the full kitchen at the moment.
I was thinking of painting the cupboards a dark grey colour (which hopefully will kind of match are hall stairway) and buying new handles. Do you think that would work? I am a bit stuck what colour to paint the green, orange and yellow tiles. Does anyone have any suggestions? We've already painted the kitchen walls 'Clunch' by Farrow and Ball and the back green wall is a mix of 2 types of green paint we had left over from our bedrooms. I dont want the tiles to clash with the cupboards or the walls and I am not sure if white might be too cold / harsh. Our kitchen is East facing so gets sun in the morning.
Also looking for recommendations of tile paint.

Comments (12)Hi Sonia, tile stickers are doing ok so far (it's about 6 months now). The ones I got are wipeable but you need to be careful you dont catch the edges. There is one near the cooker that I tried to take off and put back on (to get rid of an air bubble) about a month after I originally did them that hasn't stuck as well. I have spares so might replace that one. All the others are good so far even though they are getting splashed quite regularly near the sink and the cooker. Comments (2)Yes, although you will need to do some preparation. You will have to sand them, not too aggressively as you don't want to scratch them, but enough to help the primer adhere. I would prime it with Zinsser BIN, although if you've never used it before it takes a bit of getting used to (check out some Youtube videos of it). 4 years agoHello, it’s the multi coloured tiles that date the kitchen, more than the units. I’m not sure how hardwearing tile paint is - will it cope with being scrubbed clean, I wonder? Removing and changing the tiles is not a big or expensive job, so worth considering. Do you like wooden cladding? It gives a cosy country look. You can place it over the tiles, and then paint it with either satinwood or eggshell in the same colour as your walls, which will make them easy to clean. I LOVE the green wall, gorgeous colour. Painting the unit doors is easy, but long winded and tedious. You need to paint a couple of coats of primer, after sanding, then two coats of eggshell. Wishing you lots of luck.

4 years agoHi Tricia. I agree with the other comments that painting kitchen cabinets is a lot of work and I don’t think you would be better pleased with the end result. Some cabinets can take painting better than others. For a different idea you could extend the wall cabinets almost up to the ceiling by either finding extra wall units or if you’re handy with diy creating them yourself. Then replace doors with some mdf panels which you can then prime/paint yourself (see pics below for the kinda thing I was thinking of). Mdf doesn’t cost all that much but if you’re not confident with cutting or drilling hinge holes then a local joiner could do this for you.
Wouldn’t normally recommend painting tiles but if it’s just short term then it’s maybe worth a try. I wouldnt use any wood panels behind a gas hob tho, might be a fire risk.

Was knackered after doing the top ones so had to quit there..😊

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoIf you've committed to the green wall at the back (and it does look good with the floor), I would consider replacing the tiles with something that picks out the green but is graphic and eye catching. if it were me, knowing you will one day possibly replace the whole lot, I would not paint the cabinets (it could be such a lot of work). I suppose it's about investment, your time or money for a bit of tiling.If you are thinking of changing them, perhaps there is no harm in painting them white with tile paint to start with, it may be enough to give it a lift?
