inspiration for a blank canvas

Hello. This is the simple design for my new dressing room. The desk is just illustrative as it’s just the wardrobes that I am having fitted. There seems to be very little inspiration to draw on for what goes behind those doors. Obviously I’d like a high rail for longer clothes, and perhaps some shelving, but I don’t know where to start. What goes where? Mirrors inside or on the doors? Colour? (carpet light grey, walls can be painted) Lighting? What else? Dressing table inside and a chaise outside, or table outside for better light? Anyone had anything done recently which has been a Godsend or a bit of a waste of space?
Three large wardrobes to fill and I’m stuck!

It's hard to help really as it's really based on your personal wardrobe requirements. i would just look at your current wardrobe assuming the type of clothes you have is unlikely to change much in the near future depending on your work, lifestyle, hobbies etc. Calculate how many long hanging items you have versus blouse/shirts/trousers etc. Then look at the number of items you store in drawers, you may want bigger drawers for jumpers versus small ones for underwear. Also look at the number of shoes, boots, hats, handbags etc if you want to store those here. Is there also hanging space needed for ties, belts etc? Or a shelf for bed linen etc? It sounds quite tedious calculating it all but worth doing so the storage works for you.

i wouldn't use wardrobe space for a dressing table especially when you have space in the room. You could have mirror/s on the outside of the long wall, it will make the room feel wider. Many people choose to paint wardrobes in the wall colour so they blend into the walls, you could maybe choose a wallpaper for the the dressing table wall?

I love the idea of the duck egg blue and yellow adding a pop of colour to the white. I'd play it up a bit more and go for deep and bold jewel tones of teal, sapphire, plum and burgundy, mixed with a few of the more delicate neutral pillows you have. I think little pops of gold would do nicely with the jewel tones and match the yellow you already have. I'd definitely continue the idea of the sheepskin throw and maybe introduce a similar rug to bring some warmth and texture to the floor -perhaps a warmer beige. I think large black and white photographs of your preference would go nicely on the blank wall -perhaps flanked by some floating bookshelves to showcase any decorations that might bring more warmth and personality to the room.

Mustard tones and teal blue tones, dependant on how dark your grey is really. Using mustard or even orange as an accent colour on top of grey can look amazing!

So, after lots of sitting in the garden during last years lockdown, we were able to work out what parts of the garden were best for different purposes. We decided to keep the table by the house as its shady by the evening, which we prefer for eating, and we have various sunny/shaded seating areas. We had the paving done last October and have put the beds in this spring. We decided to incorporate a veggie patch which I'm finding very therapeutic after work, using the old decking to make the raised beds. I thought i wouldn't like looking at them from the house, but they actually make me feel quite proud! For a first year garden I think the planting is really coming on, and i was worried about planting up the shady border but it's feeling really lush. Looking forward to it all maturing, especially the climbing rose over the arbour, and the little box hedge below it. I still have a bed to sort by the conservatory (awaiting new roof), and the fences all need attention. Hope you like our update :)

I hadn’t thought of the gallery wall competing with the window so thank you. I need to make sure the frames aren’t too stark. Maybe dark grey frames with colourful photos. Thanks for the suggestion about coloured vases in the space. I love the idea of a huge coloured glass vase in that space. Totally agree that it needs a big pop of colour and it’s very plain right now. Like I said, blank canvas. I think the area looks awesome with a huge window like that and agree it’s an odd place for a window but unfortunately not logistically going to be able to change the window. Love the suggestion though.

My basic starting point would be drawers in the lower half of each wardrobe and hanging rail above. Some wardrobes however you may want full length hanging space and no drawers or only one or two. You might want some shoe racks instead of some of the lower drawers. Some people like trouser rails. Put the hanging rail as high as you can comfortably reach and if that leaves space above, then put a shelf above it.

Hi Adele,

Looks like a great space!

I agree on a mirror on one of the walls to help make it feel better. Good lighting it also key as highlighted above, no harsh spot lights, make the lighting soft and natural.

As for the interiors of your wardrobes, it certainly helps to have lots of internal drawers as they tend to keep your clothes better organised. If you have lots of shoes then a shoe organiser is key! You can also have drawers specifically for belts and accessories which are also super helpful to optimise the storage inside. I would also recommend having one area where you can hang long items of clothing such as formal attire and coats.
