Hi James, the grass is OK in part shade, rather than deep shade. Most of the nursery sites, say free draining soil, but one of them (Hoffman Nursery) said it tolerates clay. They like a bit of moisture, so you would need to avoid sites that just bake dry in summer, which is often a problem with clay soils.

Yeah struggling to fill an area along back of fence where it casts shade maybe only gets an hour or so sun in late afternoon time, quite sheltered, soil is heavy clay but is quite damp area and is a raised bed approx 450mm from ground level so was thinking the grass maybe mixed in with foxgloves might look OK?

hi - I am no expert and my spelling/memory of these plant names will be awful - , but have faced similar challenges with wet clay. In the shadiest border I have Iris, ferns, honeysuckle, astrantia, philadelphus/mock orange. Sunnier spots have fatsia japonica, deutzia strawberry fields. climbing roses, I recommend an RHS A to Z of plants, something like Right Plant Right Place as it avoids you spending money on plants that just won;t thrive in the soil conditions. For a bit of summer colour day lilys are ok in clay but may not be suitable if you have cats.Another one for good early summer colour is bleeding heart, its very pretty. Lavender and sage I am pretty sure won;t like the conditions in your photo. I have a fairly neat tall evergreen which is called crinodendron hookerianum/chile lantern tree. I've also got a silk tassel bush "James Roof"and hydrangea petiolaris, but these may be too big for your space. Christmas box/ sarcococca confusa is a nice fairly compact evergreen. As I say I am no expert, just letting you know what has managed to survive in similar conditions in my home garden. For herbs like lavender and sage I agree with Jen P's recommendation for a raised bed. Good luck with the planting!

Hi Eve, Well done for taking on a design project. Always an exciting challenge and by the looks of it you've done yourself proud. I know it's a bit late in the day to give any suggestions but perhaps you could put them to one side for a rainy day? Looking at your patio layout I would suggest a slight tweak in order to have some coherence with the circular or rather flowing feel you have tried to create. Notice how in my quick scribble I've taken out the sharp corners of the paving by making a curved edge, which is easily achieved by cutting the stone to suit the site, such as natural sandstone or preferably dark material such as slate. To hide the cut edges you can install edging cobbles or blocks with small low profile led lights interspersed between the edging blocks? Please see attached scribble to see what I mean. Second thing and this is of course completely budget dependent is because you already have a lovely stark white fence you might want to consider contrasting that with a dark material for your hard landscaping such as a nice slate or dark black limestone pavers? Hello, Looks like you have a very nice space there! Regarding your narrow border, I would suggest some pleached trees to go in there (such as in the picture below) . They are great to give you some height and do not occupy a lot of space at all. As Sonia said, you can attempt to amend your soil by digging some grit it, but the most straight forward solution in my view is to choose plants that tolerate the conditions of a heavy clay soil. Roses, some varieties of crab apples and the evergreen holy tree (which is easily found in the pleached format) are some ideas. Drip irrigation is a good idea, but heavy clay soils are very water retentive (usually puddling is a problem with this soil and not dryness). As Sonia said, newly planted plants do need more watering to stimulate the roots system to establish in the new location. The idea of putting a sofa do block children's access to the change of level in the patio is good as it will add to the cozy feel you are after. A wooden pergola on top of it as the ones that you suggested is a very good idea. You can also get retractable roofs to give you the possibility of shelter from the sun. Sonia's idea of planting scented climbers on the pergola is a very good one as well. Another idea is to add a brick edging around your patio to mark the edges and make the change of levels a bit more obvious and secure. Another idea for your gate are is to select plants that can grow through the gravel layer (provided that the gravel is not on top of concrete). As Sonia pointed out, potted plants do require much more watering than plants on the ground (once these are established). So this would be a good alternative. Hi Suzy, It is a very good idea to have a final plan for the garden and do it bit by bit as budget allows. Sometimes people try to do it all at once and it can lead to compromises in the quality of materials to make the budget go further. I think that raised beds will be a very good addition to your garden. I always say that amending a heavy clay soil should be the last option as it is time and money consuming and you need to repeat the procedure overtime. I think that either putting the planting in raised beds (which, if well thought of can be great additions to the garden, creating vertical interest, maybe acting as sections division and seating) or selecting the planting so that only plants that can tolerate this condition (roses are a good example) are used are much better options. Trellises in your case could not only work as sections divisions, but could also screen out the two sheds that you wish to have in your final garden, so probably a good idea. Layout-wise, in my opinion your curved borders do give your garden a nice shape, and creating paths that follow it somewhat would be a good idea. some of the Deschampsia grasses are OK in shade but not as tall as Calamagrostis. Foxgloves prefer sunny spots to shady ones. Depending on width of the bed, some small hydangeas might work. Or check out the crocus.co.uk website -as you can search by light levels, and see if there is anything else you like the look of. Good luck!
