Hi James, the grass is OK in part shade, rather than deep shade. Most of the nursery sites, say free draining soil, but one of them (Hoffman Nursery) said it tolerates clay. They like a bit of moisture, so you would need to avoid sites that just bake dry in summer, which is often a problem with clay soils.

Yeah struggling to fill an area along back of fence where it casts shade maybe only gets an hour or so sun in late afternoon time, quite sheltered, soil is heavy clay but is quite damp area and is a raised bed approx 450mm from ground level so was thinking the grass maybe mixed in with foxgloves might look OK?

Hi Carolins, as requested I took a couple of pictures of the garden last night. Its one hell of a mess, I'm very very much looking forward to getting it looking nice. Would be so lovely to sit out in the sun with a glass of wine (presuming we get any more sun lol). There's 2 pictures with 2 images I've combined, one which shows the view up the garden (towards the garage) and one which shows the patio and scruffy shed. The other two images show the view from by the car (the garage is on the left) and the other shows the view from what will be the patio by the garage (there's a red Poppy in the image). Might be ok on the path through the lawn to the raised beds then. I suppose I can always add something later if need be. Wouldn't have thought I'd go over more than once or twice a day to be honest (bit difficult seeing as I'm out 12 hours most days). Still playing around with the pergola idea you suggested. Quite like the look of it, just a tad concerned it may block some of the light into the dining room (which is already quite dark). The other thing I'm not sure of yet is having the pergola there if we fence the patio off as a dog run. I'd previously though of basically fencing across the entire patio. May not though, I quite liked your initial idea for the dog run. I think that other than a few tweeks to the design (mostly to add things like compost heaps lol) I'm quite happy with what I've got. So thank you very much for your help, I really appreciate it. It really helps to talk ideas through with someone.

Nice work so far, now for the fun stuff- the planting makes or breaks a project like this. A good garden designer will challenge your ideas and explore the alternatives with you to find the right solution so here goes! It's important to remember that you will be looking out at this view from the windows most of the time so THAT's the most important view. You say south facing, I guess the windows are south facing so anything against that brick wall should not filter out more light and block the view unless you want a more intimate feeling in that space. It's vital to consider the purpose of the planting along the brick wall. I'd ask you why you want trees there? The wall is attractive but do you need more screening from your neighbours? One way to add screening is to add a top trellis with cllmbers - you control EXACTLY the height and have no issues with the wall being damaged to the tree becoming too large. The requirements for planting can then be fulfilled by filling the border with structural shrubs and a good variety of shade tolerant perennials. hi - I am no expert and my spelling/memory of these plant names will be awful - , but have faced similar challenges with wet clay. In the shadiest border I have Iris, ferns, honeysuckle, astrantia, philadelphus/mock orange. Sunnier spots have fatsia japonica, deutzia strawberry fields. climbing roses, I recommend an RHS A to Z of plants, something like Right Plant Right Place as it avoids you spending money on plants that just won;t thrive in the soil conditions. For a bit of summer colour day lilys are ok in clay but may not be suitable if you have cats.Another one for good early summer colour is bleeding heart, its very pretty. Lavender and sage I am pretty sure won;t like the conditions in your photo. I have a fairly neat tall evergreen which is called crinodendron hookerianum/chile lantern tree. I've also got a silk tassel bush "James Roof"and hydrangea petiolaris, but these may be too big for your space. Christmas box/ sarcococca confusa is a nice fairly compact evergreen. As I say I am no expert, just letting you know what has managed to survive in similar conditions in my home garden. For herbs like lavender and sage I agree with Jen P's recommendation for a raised bed. Good luck with the planting!

What a fantastic space! As well as shrubs, you could easily add some trees as you have the space, just don’t plant them too near to neighbours fences as it can invade their space. My favourite trees are Birch (Betula), Mountain Ash (Sorbus) and Hawthorn (Crataegus) but there are so many to choose from. Fruit trees such as apples, pears, figs and cherries are lovely, but can be messy if you do not pick the fruit, I agree with HORTED that you need to know soil type - you can get a tester for a few quid- because, for example, putting an acid lover in a chalky soil will make it very sad. Also check aspect - sunny, shady, part-shade as again a shrub can fail if it’s in the wrong spot. Shrubs I love are the Viburnum family, Sambucus Nigra Black Lace, Hibiscus, Hydrangeas, Weigela, Ceanothus, Cornus varieties, Syringa (Lilac), Buddleija. Lovely plants to grow through your shrubs are Clematis, apart from the Montana variety that will be too vigorous.

some of the Deschampsia grasses are OK in shade but not as tall as Calamagrostis. Foxgloves prefer sunny spots to shady ones. Depending on width of the bed, some small hydangeas might work. Or check out the crocus.co.uk website -as you can search by light levels, and see if there is anything else you like the look of. Good luck!
