Comments (16)An L shaped design sounds fine to me and I think it's practicality will outweigh concerns about it dominating. I agree a soft white is nicer in an older property and a more modern look than gloss but I don't agree that a painted finish is better with young ones as it can chip- I would look for a laminate door which despite being perceived to be lower quality will likely stand up to rough treatment...See MoreWhich kitchen brand and appliances would you recommend?
Comments (21)Just to weigh in on the Howdens comments, the key is to make sure you know someone in the trade who can put you forward to them, that way you just get dealt with as a trade using their account. They do have sales on but generally speaking the price doesn't fluctuate much through the year, except when they have their big sale on which is usually October time. I do use Howdens and no, they're not perfect but most of the grumbles I hear are more to with customer service which don't fall in line with the glossy showroom kitchen providers. The quality of the kitchens is very good (25 year warranty iirc) so if you have access to them then do get a quote from them. I think what I would say is that if you go to Howdens, expect a slightly tradesman type relationship (the showrooms are far from impressive) but a key thing is that they hold stock on most items. If you get a damaged door for example, it can be replaced next day, try getting that out of Homebase....... With regard to appliances, we have SMEG in our kitchen and I'd never buy it again. Hobbs been fine, but three new ovens on warranty and whilst it now works fine, the previous two didn't. Previously we had Bosch for everything and it all worked faultlessly, so I can't recommend them enough....See MoreNew layout for kitchen after side-return extension
Comments (4)Wow - these are some excellent ideas! Going to explore them in more detail for sure. My sketch is really not very accurate - the width of the room from the chimney stack to the 'pantry' side is 320cm. So I guess there is room for the large island, but now I'm rethinking the whole thing! We have put in the permitted development request to the council, so the space won't change. These suggestions will really help us finalise the layout. 1 other question. The ceiling height in the current dining space is 280cm, it then drops with a step to where the current kitchen is to 260cm. We're thinking of removing the step and making the who new extension space a floating floor to allow the existing house to breath. This will make the extension space ceiling height 245cm. Do you think this is too low or will look strange? Or should we keep the step down for the benefit of a higher ceiling in the extension section - but sacrifice the floor being able to 'breath'....See MorePatio/Garden Layout Confusion
Comments (3)Hi. Looks like a big plot so I can see why you’re struggling for ideas. Could you post more photos of the garden from different angles (You can post extra photos in comments.) Might help to generate some ideas. Where do you currently park your cars? What does perc stand for? With a large space like this I think there’s lots of possibilities. I’m guessing you’ll be getting landscapers in. Did a quick doodle and thought to use both x and y for patio and also a little path to an extra patio. Thought it might be good idea to make the most of both sides of the garden. 🙂...See MoreOnePlan
