Price to charge client for mural

Hello, I am new to the UK and would like to have some direction and advice on how to charge a client to paint a mural. Size 2 m x 2 meters. I will provide materials. Are there travel costs ?

I would suggest you charge an hourly rate and fix a maximum time with clients before you start. But o luck with it - I do admire your skill!

Personally I'd charge a fixed price for the art, as there shouldn't really be any variables unless the wall isn't sound? Add materials on top (allowing a small percentage for margin of error) and typically people will charge for travel if they are not within x miles of your location but you'd normally disclose that on your website etc. Good luck!

Danielle you have raised some familiar concerns regarding understanding the costs; we often suggest to our clients who don't have an interior designer that the benefits are measurable and worthy of the investment. We work closely with interior designers and understand their respective offerings - and associated costs, which means we can refer our customers to the right affordable company/individual. In most scenarios they do end up purchasing some level of service. This is ironic for us as some clients also believe that having any form of lifestyle technology is expensive; and it is their interior designer who then refers us to help explain how our services will benefit a given project. ...and yes, the majority go on to secure services from us. For us, and many interior designers, i think the best approach is to declare that the initial meeting is free and you stand to scope the customer's requirements, suggest options and align costs. It's chargeable time we have to invest and we can always chat on the phone prior to agreeing a meeting.

There is a common mistake made by many a homebuyer that once they have registered their details with an estate agent, that estate agent will act in the buyer’s interests to find them their new home. This is a fallacy perpetuated by estate agents, as having a large database of potential buyers attracts sellers to list their properties with them. And there is the rub: estate agents are retained by the seller and they act exclusively in the best interests of sellers. In fact, they are legally obliged to do so. Whilst an estate agent will happily register your details on their database and may even send you emails containing property details, they are not acting in your (the buyer) best interests. They are merely trying to generate interest in the properties of their retained clients (the seller) in order to achieve the highest price possible for those clients – acting in the seller’s best interest, as required under their agency agreement. So who looks after the buyer’s best interests? Well, that would be a buying agent. Buying agents act exclusively for buyers and use their network of contacts to find properties that match their client’s criteria. They do not rely on a single estate agent but a whole network of contacts involved in the property industry. This means that only the properties that best suit the buyer’s criteria are considered. It also means that a buying agent will have access to view properties before the majority of other buyers and often before a property even appears on the market. This gives their clients an advantage over those attending later viewings with hoards of other hopefuls. A good buying agent will only work for a handful of clients at any given time and will never have two clients with identical requirements. This avoids competition and helps the buying agent avoid a bidding war between its clients – this is in complete contrast to the goals of the estate agent to whom a bidding war is manna from heaven. A reputable buying agent will charge fixed fees so there is no advantage to them in keeping the purchase price high. In fact, from a reputational point of view, it is much better for a buying agent to obtain the lowest possible prices for their clients. Despite the name, buying agents do much more than find properties for clients. They manage and liaise with all parties throughout the acquisition process to make buying a property as smooth and stress free as possible for their client. They can recommend solicitors, surveyors, insurers and finance brokers and, after you have bought the property, can help you find interior designers, stagers, decorators, architects and other professionals to make your property perfect. Buying agents, or property finders as they are also known, were, for a long time, believed to be the preserve of the wealthy, celebrities or only for those people prepared to appear on TV. However, as more and more buyers are finding out, this is simply no longer the case. It is also stressful and time consuming. So, it is quite remarkable that some buyers are prepared to gamble such large sums of money without professional help, guidance and advice; whilst the seller has access to the guidance and advice of their estate agent. Architect plans awful- do I have to pay?

There seems to be a few issues at play here.... Firstly, your architect should clearly communicate with you whether the drawings are concept drawings, planning drawings, building control or construction drawings. Each different type will contain different information, so if you don't know what type you have I would advise you ask. Secondly, what were your payment terms with your architect? When we're working on private residential projects we break the project down into 3 phases and only charge for each phase on completion of the work carried out. So you shouldn't be in a position where you're tied into an agreement that you can't get out of. Also, we set our fees as fixed prices for each phase and fully understand that the best design will need to go through several iterations before it's good to go. In fact I never anticipate that the first draft will be issued without revisions. Design is dialogue, so it requires the client's feedback and comments to fine tune. Our fee doesn't change depending on the number of changes required - the only time we would charge an additional fee would be if the brief changes or the scope of work grows. If your architect is expecting to be paid for work you're not happy with I would suggest there is something not right there. Check your agreement and see what it says about what your architect will deliver in return of payment. And thirdly (and probably most importantly), if there are such basic errors on your drawings I would say they're as good as useless. Once you've lost trust in the reliability of a drawing it can be difficult to win it back. The mistakes you've seen are only the ones you've spotted. There's a good chance that there are hidden mistakes too, and they could lead to costly issues on site. As a minimum the drawings should be accurate, regardless of whether or not you like them. For that reason alone I would say you shouldn't pay for the work until it is at least free of basic error. I hope that's helpful. Good luck with the project!

Hi, for us taking a step back and re thinking with a local builder who we really got on with was the game changer. He had people he worked with regularly who helped with amending the drawings etc. He also really wanted the job because he could see the potential, we are also fortunate to have a big green with easy access to the plot. He was one of many I contacted through Checkatrade after reading reviews. We really had got stuck trying to adapt the grand design to fit our budget and were intending to go ahead with that end result. Then one day I was in the garden and looked back at the house and realised we were going to end up with some pointless box on the back of the house so I posted on Houzz and now work has started and we are really excited. Covid has made a difference to cost and availability but our builder is as on top of that as he can be and we are taking his advice on e.g which bricks are readily available and reasonably priced. It is early days for our build (concrete poured on Friday) so we have our fingers crossed it will stay a positive experience throughout! So my advice would be don’t give up but be prepared to keep searching for the right person to help you achieve what you want, be open to the suggestions of others but don’t forget how you want to use the space when you have it. I agree that an hourly rate is the way most professionals work. I don’t know what hourly rate you charge but it seems like the range is £50-£200 an hour depending on the profession. Given the cost of a print in a department store I’m sure the homeowners will be getting a bargain whatever your hourly rate.

I used to paint murals years ago (it was great fun) and in general people are prepared to pay. I would work out a price and just charge for the job, it keeps things easier for the client. Most artists I know (I teach artists) charge a typical day rate of around £300 a day but of course this is a one off. This may help.
