Living/dining room colour advice
Hi all
I need to redecorate our new house and am trying to choose paint colours. It's currently yellow. I was thinking warm neutrals and like the easy neutrals from F&B - do you think they would work in this East facing room? picture shows both halves of the room. Should i do ammonite on the walls or will it look gloomy? Ammonite on the end walls and white on the rest? White wall and darker woodwork?
Can change colour of footstool. We had pale powder in our last home but that was very large light and airy and I'm not sure it would suit the feel of this place.

4 years agoHi lovely, ok so how do you wan the room(s) to feel? With an east facing room you will get lots of light afternoon onwards especially from spring summer so the light will be warmer. Looks like your windows and doors are looking into the garden? You could have a soft green which is warm and light and connect its to the garden. Something like Teresa's Green Farrow & Ball :
Or if you prefer something warmer Setting Plaster Farrow & Ball is lovely and great for small spaces.
I think Ammonite will get too washed out with that warm light and could make it feel more on the cooler end. I also suggest keeping the colour the same on all of the walls as your ceilings appear to be low so you want to allow your eye to flow right across your room. Rather than have a break in the colours. Hope that makes sense! I suggest painting the fireplace a fresher colour too like white.

Long dark living room area - how to separate dining living areas?
Comments (6)How about putting the chest of drawers under the window so it is visible when you first walk into the room. Then put the desk where the chest of drawers is currently. I would then get a large storage TV unit for the end wall where the dark furniture is. This would be best in white or taupe to keep it light in that end of the room. You could even get this made in the same units as the kitchen cupboards. I would buy new 3 seater sofas in a traditional or classic style to suit the antiques in a beige colour linen and then two armchairs in a patterned material - floral or stripe to suit your personal taste. I would keep the sofas in the same position and place the two armchairs facing the TV unit, side by side. You would need to make sure the armchairs were placed so they were easy to walk around and they would need to be small but comfortable. Keep the table where it is and update the lamp to a more statement piece. An orchid (fake or real) on the chest of drawers would add a touch of class. I quite like the rug that is there as it goes nicely with the antiques and you could bring out the blues with a few duck egg blue coloured cushions, and a duck egg blue roman blind would soften the window. We have several (sitting room, study, hall, bedroom ..... they're a bit addictive), with fabric using a couple of the colours in each for stuff like cushions, curtains etc. with neutral walls. I agree with minnie about the patterns. To get the right colour combinations, at a reasonable price, you could find a company that does a range with the colour or colours you're looking for and then look for remnants on ebay, to get them at bargain prices. That's worked well for us. Comments (3)Hi Minnie, thanks for your reply. The paint brand is Johnstone's. My wife also thought Brilliant white might be too cold so we are now considering something with a little bit more warmth, possibly a more 'creamy' colour. The living room faces West, the dining room East - the living room gets the sun in the evening. The paneling would be going around the inside edge of the arch, basically an architrave that wraps the sides and the under edge. I have had it suggested to me that we paint the two window walls and the archway in blue as that will link the rooms together whilst ensuring that the colour is visible regardless of which room you are in or where you are sat? The boards will stay exposed though we are sanding them are treating with a light oak coloured varnish. Furniture wise, the sofa is an beige/mocha fleck colour, dining table is 'shabby chic' wooden top with white legs, Coffee table is wood topped with white legs....See More

4 years agoAmmonite is basically a pale grey so rather cool. Looking at your furniture I think a pale country shade would look nice, something like F&B Cromarty or Mizzle. It will tie in with your curtains too. Shaded White, as Rukmini suggested, is also a slightly green tinged neutral which would look lovely. However, it does seem you want to stick with a pale neutral, so how about All White? A very, very pale off white. Wimborne White and Pointing are also really pale and tend to be warmer.
