what to do with this hallway
Comments (23)With such a generous space you have the real opportunity to achieve a very elegant space. Of course, what can be achieved depends on budget, But this is what we would suggest: - re-condition the stairs, with better, lighter balusters, newel posts, a proper curled bottom step - Install a large lantern in place of the chandelier - replace the fireplace surrounds with something less crude and render; render or line its inner walls; recess the hearthstone; add a large mirror above the mantel, which will reflect the light of the lantern. - Paint all timber: the balusters, the double doors - if you paint the flat panel radiator the same colour of the wall and the double doors a contrasting colour, the radiator will become less noticeable. Radiator covers often draw more attention to it and dramatically cut down the radiator's efficiency, defeating the point twice. - White is not the only way: consider a warm gray or even a colour for the walls. Use contrast to your advantage. It will help to draw people's attention to what you want them to see (lantern, fireplace, stairs, double doors) and away from what you don't want them to notice (radiator) Here are some examples we have recently completed:...See MoreWhat practical feature/item do you secretly crave for your house?
Comments (98)Lights which automatically turn on when I enter a room (especially in the kitchen and in the hallway from the bedroom to the bathroom) and lights inside my wardrobes (especially inside the one in the bedroom: I often get up earlier than my hubby, and it may be still dark outside, and I don't want to wake him up while I'm looking for my stockings)....See MoreInject colour into a hallway
Comments (8)There are some good images provided here for decorating ideas.. I'm intrigued by the fact that you don't like the stained glass above the door. Here's a thought.... 'double glaze' it from the inside with a single piece of plum coloured glass (or any other colour you fancy). If you really want to go whacky and make a feature of it add some LED strips into the window casing to light the window. From the inside it will appear to glow plum and from the outside it will act like a porch light. What you'll be doing is adding light to the hall which you need, setting the colour scheme that you want, hiding the original window from the hallway and doing something quirky with colour which I think you are up for!...See Moreideas for dark hall
Comments (26)Thanks :) and that’s the sort of thing I’ve been considering. For example I could make the pattern of frames and mounts part of the display by having them uniform and choosing images that are almost monochrome. There are lots of sky or sea scapes or portraits to choose from that are almost monochrome. The other thought was to buy a large size print and cut down to use just a portion of it so it’s “disguised” and just being used for its light and dark contrasts. But there are so many images that are really amazing that I wonder if a should just pick one for each of the walls. ?? Will let the thoughts percolate for a while I think. And when I fo something will post back. At one point I was thinking of trying to make my own Japanese Enso symbol. Part of its significance is practise making the drawer of it better I believe. Sometimes they draw it with a big calligraphy brush and I saw on a tv program a Japanese artist using a brush that was as big as a mop!...See MoreChloe Edwards
