F&B Mizzle versus Dulux Tranquil Dawn

Hi All,

Does anyone know if there's much difference between Mizzle and Tranquil Dawn?

I've got the tester for Tranquil Dawn which comes out as a very sage green (it's for our Hall/Landing/Stairs) I like it, but am wondering whether to splash out on a Mizzle or Cromarty tester pot. The downside to this is they're expensive and it'll be a half hour round tripto B&Q....

I am sorry! It is The Color Strategist Color Wheel. It allows us to place ALL colours into Hue Families. The outside degrees, plots the LCh Colour Space.
LCh relates to human perception of colour. We process colour through 3 key attributes L = Lightness (how light or dark a colour is) C = Chroma (how near neutral or colourful, a colour is) H = Hue - what colour is it, in which Hue family does it belong? If we measure a colour with a tiny device, it gives us a value for each if those elements, so we know a lot if detail about it.

The inside of the wheel plots a different, but related space - the Munsell Colour Space. It takes a little more working out, but the results are even easier to understand. Here the attributes are Value (how light or dark), chroma - (how colourful or neutral) and Hue Family notation, such as 5.8GY.

These measurable attributes are what paint firms use to make colour. But the only place you learn how to specify colour this way, is via The Land of Color.

This method gives you objective, measurable attributes for each colour, measured under the same quality of light. So it offers different attributes by which to compare colours. So useful.

I will try and show an example.

Hi. I have had a very quick look and they appear very similar indeed. They both have a Value of 7.7 out of 10. 0 being black & 10 being white. They are both within 10 degrees of each other on the Color Strategist Color Wheel. I have Mizzle at 5.8GY and Tranquil Dawn 7.9GY. (Both in the Green Yellow Hue Family)
Mizzle is a tad more colourful than Tranquil Dawn with a Chroma Value of 0.9 and Tranquil Dawn I have at 0.7. So Tranquil Dawn is that little bit more greyed than Mizzle. Mizzle is very slightly more yellow than Tranquil Dawn. If you put them in the same room, I think you would be hard pressed to distinguish between the two.

Thank you very much, Carolina and Richard. These tips are invaluable. I did indeed fall into that trap and it’s not gone very well - tv is so small compared to the rest of the room. I’m thinking of getting the bookshelves as Richard suggested to fill that side up a bit after repainting, and then a storage kind of TV stand as shown in one of the images. Might have to get a larger TV. I’m browsing ikea at the moment for the curtain colours Sonia suggested. I’ve got a long enough tension rod, so could take that higher than the current rod is now. Got the dining table, which is rectangular and light brown, hoping it doesn’t conceal the curtains. I’ll do these bit by bit to see how each twist, adds up and transforms this room 🤩 Really can’t thank you all enough!

Lovely room. How about a pallet of green and heather? It would be a bit of a country look so I’m not sure if that’s your style or not? Your sofa looks a little lilacy as does the checked cushion, so soft green walls - say F&B Mizzle or Cromarty or Dulux Tranquil Dawn. Add more co-ordinating cushions. A large padded footstool would look smart in the middle or a large coffee table. It does look a bit bare in the middle. A room never looks finished without art on the walls and maybe a mirror. Of course if you dislike heather, you could try a soft blush pink, which always goes nicely with grey.

The room feels darker because you've added something to a plain white room! There was nothing there before and now there's something for your eyes to notice. Balance the room out by adding more things for your eyes to look at. The room is currently bare. The MDF panel is your backdrop so what's on show? Great thing about MDF is you can paint it again if you don't like the colour. Be brave follow through with your design!

P.s. just something to be aware of,,,,,low chroma colours (near neutrals) which fall between approx. 60-90° on the Color Strategist Wheel can shift purple/plum, in imbalanced light or with strong contextual influences e.g. red carpet.

They aren’t purple and don’t have purple ‘undertones’; they are just susceptible to certain lighting conditions. It doesn’t happen in every circumstance, but it may.

If this does occur, we can use the Wheel to move you a few degrees away from colours which demonstrate this phenomenon. Much more efficient than buying a whole load more samples in the hope that one of them will work better.

I have Mizzle on our hall, stairs and landing, Cromarty in my office and Tranquil Dawn in my lounge. For the F&B Mizzle and Cromarty I purchased a lookalike from Johnstones. Much cheaper and I like Johnstone’s paint. Colour was the same. When I had a Dulux Tranquil Dawn tester I took it to Johnstones and the colour was nothing like when I tried it on the walls, so I stayed with the Dulux brand.

Cromarty is the lightest out of them all. A pale green with what I’d class as the merest undertone of a silver glint in it.

Mizzle looks different in different situations. In our hall it can look as though it has a definite blue tint, while up the stairs and on the landing it’s a green. Our hall is bright hence the blue coming out. Still nice though.

Dulux Tranquil Dawn is their 2020 colour. It’s in my lounge and is a greeny grey. A very modern clean colour.

I think all the colours will look different depending on the light. All nice colours.

I think Daisy is spot on with how different colours can look in different lights. I have Cromarty in my living room and I love it so much. Sometimes it looks pale and grey and in other lights it looks a prefect green. I enjoy the colour changes. F&B are expensive, but they have the most delicious, soft colours that look so good in a period room. Here’s Cromarty in my house.

Sonia, when I looked at your photo I thought it was very similar too. Here’s my lounge

in Tranquil Dawn. Possibly a bit darker. Depends on the angle of the photo.
