Design Dilemma - Kitchen Upstand

I have designed my kitchen with an upstand with storage where some would normally have a breakfast bar.
I am having a small overhang above the worktop for task lighting. The electrician is putting strip LED lighting that is angled to throw light across the worktop rather than straight down.
My question is, is about the overhang. I worried it could look weird!
Any thoughts or advice/ideas appreciated.

Can we assume you are have the same worktop material on the kitchen units and on the front and top of the upstand? If so, I would suggest a small, say 25mm overhang on the upstand top with a rebate cut into the underside of it for the LED channel. Don't cut the rebate right to the end (the camera end in this picture) because you do not want to see the end of the LED. Stop the rebate 10mm in.

Hi Artform, thank you for your reply. The worktop is 30mm, the front and top of the
upstand will be 20mm. The rebate is a great idea as we don't want the light fixing to be too visible. Will the rebate work with a right angled LED?

Using a large chopping block that slides over the sink will bring back your joined prep area. In most homes the worktop above the DW is constantly stacked with plates ready to go in ( by family members too lazy to put it in the DW) so it’s better to have this in option C too. Ultimately it’s your choice though, I’m just pointing out the safety issue out of concern only. I’d hate for you to tip while trying to drain a large pan of pasta.

I just have upstand in our current kitchen, and I’ve found that it generally has a slightly unfinished feeling, plus the wall paint doesn’t wipe down all that well (perhaps because the walls are quite uneven). @ellie why do you say that? I’ve never really considered that there are tiles which should only be used in one of the other. The picture shows a bathroom but the description on the mandarin stone website mentions kitchen in the usage list.

The 2 windows are they same or being replaced by patio doors to garden? If so, which is a door? If not doors, I'd want the windows to be the same for cohesion in the space. Maybe a layout like this, banquet bench type dining area could maybe work?

I suggest you use 30mm on the top of the upstand as well - just so there is plenty of material left after rebating. There are aluminium LED sections that are fully rebated and have the LED angled forward - see https://www.ledkia.com/uk/buy-aluminium-profiles-for-led-strips/3830-1m-aluminium-profile-for-p5-2-led-strips-.html . If you rebate the underside of the top like the attached image, you should be fine.
