Urgent - heating our conservatory

We have a large conservatory that is a playroom / sitting room, and is therefore in use all day every day. It's been heated up till now by a Dimplex 3kw plug in radiator, but recently we noticed the socket it was plugged into had cracked, and the cause is that the plug is getting extremely hot. This is actually the 2nd socket it has cracked but we've only just figured out the cause (we replaced the first). So we unplugged it and tried using a smaller plug in radiator, but that plug started getting very hot too. What could be the cause of this, and what other options do we have to heat the conservatory (other than plumbing a radiator in)? It's pretty urgent as we can't use the room with no heating. Thanks for any suggestions.

This sounds like you need an electrician to visit and check the socket as a matter of urgency

Yes but also have the heater checked.

In the mean time, do not use it.

Hi Anita, thank you for your lovely comments. We do not use green oak on our orangeries based on the fact that the timber will move too much when it is exposed to changes in temperatures (heating internally) in this state and could cause breakages in the glass or encourage leaks. Instead, we season our own oak (allow the timber to dry out naturally) and select the most suitable timbers for each position, obviously it is a natural product so it will still move but it will have a lot less movement due to the fact the majority of the moisture in the centre of the beam should have already dried out. You need to comply with building regulations to remove the doors, however a lot of people do remove them, me being one of them! We use ours as a dining area too and it flows through from the kitchen. I'm prepared for the issue to come up if/when we sell and we would offer to have the doors put back on, but I doubt the buyer would want this anyway. I know some people have found it cold in the winter, we haven't had a winter yet but do have underfloor heating.

If you were our client, we would first assess which way the house faces in order to understand the direction of the sun and the likely impact on the space in terms of light and heat, plus we would ask what use you intend to place on the new space. It is also the case that with whatever heating - a fully glazed conservatory can seem an inhospitable space in the winter months. Even in the UK heat gain during our short summer is a major consideration and whilst roof blinds can be added - these can spoil the original design intent. Depends whether you want efficient or always warm underfoot? Efficiency of UFH affected by insulation. How airtight is the house? Do you have mechanical ventilation etc?

I had a similar problem in my porch. Turned out the heater had been wired in a very dangerous way-electrician said it was a wonder it hadn’t gone on fire. Get it checked before using.

Have you considered a bio-ethanol fireplace? There are freestanding options so no instillation needed and you can move it and use it as needed but they have a real fire and real heat - and they look great!
