F&B Scotch blue ??????

Inspired by Patrina's study make over and the wonderfully transformed BIlly, the OH was inspired to redo his office.

It's a fairly big space about 6m x 3.5m, with extremely tall walls - someone previously thought it would be a wizard wheeze to remove the ceiling of the room and have the ceiling on the underside of the roof - not lending itself to good temperature management - prone to being chilly in the winter and stifling in the summer but hey ho - it's not my study/office!!! Sadly I don't have pictures at present.

It's west facing and has a biggish window about 2m x 1.5m (on one of the shorter walls) so it is quite light, but the end furthest from the window, can get a bit darker than the rest of the room, because of the size of the room.

Anyhoo, after Patrina's triumph with Billy, the OH has secured 5 double Billys complete with glazed doors for a bargain £175. As he is colour blind, it's all down to me to design, spec and project manage said update.

So I have suggested we paint the the cabinets in F&B Scotch Blue, with the lower glass part of the door obscured with gold - faux gold leaf applied to the inside of the glass - which will be a faff or my preference (ie easier) gold liquid leaf, that you can just paint on. Failing that we may just go for the easy option of trying to just paint it the same colour as the wood.

But I'm hesitant about the Scotch Blue and wondered if anyone had used it anywhere? There don't appear to be many pictures on Google etc of examples where it's been used (unsurprisingly because it's new) and the F&B website isn't very enlightening either. My other question is, would you paint the wall on which the bookcase will be, in the same colour? It's such a strong colour I wondered if a huge expanse of wall of it may be too imposing.

My last question is, what should I pair the Scotch Blue with? For either 3 or the 4 walls? We've just bought some beautiful (2nd hand) silk curtains for the room, which are warm light gold and a kind of lapiz blue and I've been kind of putting off the decision about the wall colour until the curtains come back from being shortened.

These are the curtains, which will be over 2m wide and 2m drop:-

So any suggestions for the walls?

Hi Ribena. You’re right there’s not many images of the Scotch blue. From the few I found it looks like a lovely rich but dark navy, should look fab I reckon (I’d go for the full wall). Not sure what complimentary colour would look good either but I was interested in the effect you’re planning for the glass on the billy doors. I saved this some time ago with the intention of trying it on my own Billy’s: https://thicketworks.com/antiqued-mirror-effect/
It’s an antique mirror effect but applied to the back of the glass and instead of using silver spray paint use gold. Technique is similar to that of verre Églomisé. I’ve been meaning to try it for ages but I cheated and used tinted mirror film instead. 🙂
Share some photos of the room when you can as I think this always helps to visualise colours.

White would look fresh but if you didn't want a true white you could go for something like Strong White which has a grey tone to it. If you want a deeper colour, Hardwick White is one of the recommended complimentary colours.

The cupboards look nice but I know what you mean when you have a colour in your head and it doesn't look like that. I'm thinking get the door company to do the black blue and then get the closest RAL colour for the garage door and then perhaps get someone to spray it with F&B later on. Anyway the saga continues... Will send pics and keep you posted when we sort it out. Thanks for all your help and suggestions

Hello! It’s arrived but is being fitted Monday :0) The colour wasn’t quite what I wanted as although it’s not supposed to have any blue in it, if can look blue in some lights. I don’t mind it looking deep navy but sometimes it looks lighter. Will see when it’s all up though as with the worktop on the island and overhang, it will probably just look more black! Bear in mind the company didn’t use actually F&B paints as they mix their own. Definately advises paying for a test door first as they got the colour totally wrong at first (was bright blue!) and it was hard work getting the manufacturers to check it and do it again. They almost didn’t.

What primer for F&B Hague Blue?

    Q

Hi Sarah, I don't think it needs a primer if you're using the light colours or painting a light colour over a light wall in my personal opinion. -It's a preference, completely up to you. If you're painting a dark colour over a light or recently plastered wall however, the dark tones primer is definitely is worth using in my experience :) Hope that's helpful.

That’s a great blue !!! How much natural daylight is in the room ? And from which aspect ie east facing window or south etc - as it’s a strong colour so will absorb rather than bounce back the daylight - you may need to counteract this with more ambient and task lighting .

Rachelmidlands - my first thoughts for the glass doors were inspired by verre Églomisé, which I love. But I suspect it's going to be an awful lot of trouble (and the ten doors would be an awful lot of work) to get the effect that the OH probably won't even notice.

Oneplan - good point about the light. The window is west facing but the wall is to the left of it, so never gets any direct light from the window.

But the cabinets are going to have internal lighting and I'm thinking of having some sort of hidden strip light on the top of the cabinets, to illuminate the wall above. But lighting in the room is something we've done pretty well already, with a big chandelier in the centre, and spots dotted around. We've also got up wash lights on the ledge which was left when they took the ceiling down. Plus the OH has a desk lamp and a floor lamp. I can't abide gloomy rooms!!

Thanks for those pictures Mandy Ross, I suspect it may just be too bright a blue and whilst I absolutely love how it looks, I don't think it's what I can see in my 'vision' for the room. I think I may go back to my first thought of Hague blue, but I'm not sure how much green that has in it.

Some of your post is missing I think ? See screenshot attached.

Re west facing - lovely evening sunshine - but probably benefit from some extra hidden ‘on all day’ type ambient light - like lighting over paintings or uplights ontop of bookcases to bounce light back down off ceiling ( min of 350mm gap between bookcase to and ceiling to be effective ) or could be on a pressure pad and timer so only on when needed.

Oneplan that's so weird because I can still see it all. This is what it says:-

    Hi 👋🏻
It’s possible to measure colours so that you don’t have to guess their attributes. It just takes a little device which links wirelessly to your phone.
It measures colours under a standardised light source, so they are all considered from the same starting point.
If you link it with this specialist colour wheel, it’s also possible to plot them into Hue Families. Very helpful when working out colour combinations. Other info. includes how light or dark it appears (Value), how near neutral or colourful it is (Chroma), how much light it reflects
(LRV). This example shows a couple of golden type colours, from Scotch Blue’s complementary Hue Family of Yellow.

So a little bit of an update.

We decided to go with the F&B Scotch blue for the bookcase and some liquid leaf paint for the gold for the inside of the lower glass panels.

The curtains are back from from being shortened, so we've been able to decide on the wall colour - F&B India Yellow.

We scored some cushions in a lovely blue with gold spots, half price at John Lewis for an alcove seat in there and I'm using the off cuts from the silk curtains to make three more cushions.

We've settled on an slightly off white for the woodwork and for painting the stone fireplace.

He's bought a new electric sit and stand desk and manged to sell his old desk on Gumtree.

So all in all, it's coming together now.

As we've got all the paint and he's no really venturing out much as he's now working from home, there's no excuse not to get right it in the evening and weekends now.

Soooooo, the makeover is STILL going on. **eyeroll**

The walls are finally painted, in F&B India Yellow - looks gooooooood.

The five 2nd hand Billy bookcases are done, in position and are looking F-I-E-R-C-E! The Scotch Blue with the liquid leaf gold in the bottom glass panel is great and goes with the blue and gold wallpaper on the back boards - I managed to score some discontinued Ikea cupboard lights that we wanted from a seller on Ebay, who took an offer.

The curtains are up on the freshly painted curtain pole. The woodwork (bar the doors) has been painted and the grey stone fireplace is now a slightly off white.

I've just bought a 2nd hand Ikea Poang chair on our little local neighbourhood website for £15, which we're going to attempt to dye the cream seat blue - I'll report back on the success of THAT venture.

However..........the room is a total tip and the OH is running out of steam and interest.

I thought that he was diligently working away up there last weekend, so I left him to it - only to find out yesterday that he had been making an electric double bass out of wood - don't ask. >:-(

That's a very good question. I actually haven't been in there recently. The OH has been working from home since before lockdown and he isn't the tidiest of people, so I've left him pretty much to it. It's his space, if he makes it a tip, that's on him.

However, as there appears to be enquiring minds wanting to know, I've just asked him how it looks and he's said it's okay (?) :-( ...............But we all know that a lot of blokes have a very different definition of okay to that of a female.

He's disappointed with the Billys, as they're not quite up to snuff because he wasn't able to get the glass shelves during lockdown.

So I've dispatched him to take some pictures, so we'll see.

One can really envisage what it will look like when it’s done. Fab progress so far. The gold and yellow work really well together. Love the gold leaf/wallpaper combo on the Billies.
It’s a gorgeous space. I’d prefer some colour on the fireplace if I were doing it for myself.

The fireplace was the most horrendous, drab, light sapping grey/brownish local stone, so the cream is a MAHOOSIVE improvement.
