Teal Sofa / Natural Oak Floor? And Rug?

Hi all,

We're currently in the process of buying our first home and in the (I imagine) usual dilemma of trying to balance style with budget!

Our immediate focus is the living/dining room (approx 7.4m x 3.6m).

We've got our minds set on the Zinc Teal sofa from DFS. Our intention is to buy the corner piece (see link below) and the "cuddler" chair.

I've tried to show these (very roughly) in blue on the floorplan below.

Note: the red boxes are placeholders for dining table, shelving and my piano; the grey box is a placeholder TV stand. Neither of which is really to scale.

Question 1: In your opinion would these teal sofas look good (at least okay) with a natural oak floor (laminate...) like the one below?

Or should we go for a darker oak? My concern with dark is making the room feel too small.

Question 2: With a natural oak floor, what would be a good rug colour to go for between the sofa and other wall. I was thinking perhaps a very plain dark brown rug?

Other opinions welcome! We'll take any advice we can get!!!

Nice sofa. I think it will look lovely with a natural oak floor. As the sofa is a scandi style I would keep the floor light or natural. Although brown is often teamed with teal I think a grey or beige rug, either plain or a subtle faded pattern, would look much nicer. Here’s some examples.

Minnie and Grouse suggest sofas maybe in a corner sofa left side on top photo in a light grey chenile fabric with cushions in different shades of teal and navy perhaps and different textures would not use a busy pattern as floor has a patterned fnish or keep it simple the odd cushion. The curtains in a natural grey linen full length with roman blinds in darker shade of grey. Perhaps a grey rug too. A floor standing light in far left corner behind a corner sofa unit would give you a different light source and be great at night for more ambience. A very large mirror on left wall would make the room feel twice as big and add more light. A must is side tables either side of sofa end for coffees and drinks. Good luck!

I don’t know much about colour but looking at the room the first thing I thought was what awful bright light there was taking over the room. Think it would look miles better immediately with floor and table lamps. I’d only be switching the down lighters on when I’m cleaning up in that room or if I was in there in the daytime. It is a lounge rather than workspace after all.

Hi, what do you think of this rug (or something like that) and these coffee tables? But had to give them a light rub down, the wax, rub down again. It will never put the boards back to pre-scratch sorry to say. But yours looks a lot more forgiving on light boards (vs o it dark boards!)

The floor is nice but the blue of the sofa will bring out the orange tones of the floor. I don't know if I'd go for something less warm. I filtered the same range under beige and there were a few nice ones but have just attached the one link.

are you planning on taking the fire out given you've mentioned a tv unit? I'm not sure on the layout with the snuggler next to the sofa as it gives a waiting room feel, it feels cosier etc if a chair can be angled towards the sofa for conversation etc. That snuggler is also large and it may overwhelm the room with a dining table etc. Do you think you would open up the kitchen to dining at any point? Controversial but just thinking of swapping living and dining to keep the fire or moving the kitchen door if possible. Are there doors to the garden? I would also bear Ellie's advice in mind.

I would 100% get the keys first. It's hard to see from the photos but if you have any art, or need to do some plastering after fitting lighting then it's good to not have bulky furniture. I don't really think you know a house until you live in it for a bit, I would hold off until you are in. Minnie is correct, the more orange wood is, the more interacts with other colours, so the bluer the sofa is, the more orange the floor looks. A slightly cooler floor (not grey) may be better to give you options with colour.
