Replacement bath/shower mixer taps

I have been moaning about my bath taking a long time to fill for years, 30 minutes!

A recent chat with my cousin where he suggested I check I don't have high pressure system taps in a low pressure system.

So after some research, I do have a low pressure system. But what the taps are i haven't a clue. They are branded Nabis if that helps.

No problem, I first thought, had a look round and for £25-40 I can buy a replacement. That is until I did something unusual for me, I checked what I needed. The stalk/pipe stem centres and therefore the holes in my bath, are at about 130mm, but all the tap sets I have been able to find have been 180mm.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced bath/shower mixer tap for a Low pressure system?

Hi Tony, your best bet is to go to a proper plumbers merchant (they’re usually hidden on industrial estates!) and discuss your issue with the tradesperson at the counter. They really know their stuff and will steer you in the right direction. They have access to thousands of brands, unlike diy stores who have very limited stocks. Walking into one can be daunting if you’re not a plumber, but I did it so I’m sure you can! Just google plumbers merchants to find your nearest.

Thanks Sonia. Sometimes the soimplest solutions are the best.

Extremely perceptive, on how daunting some trade counters can be. I guess it is the same for some people going to a motor parts place.

Two things on Grohe: First, if you happen to do a Germany trip ... pretty much any DIY / plumbing store stocks “Grohe Sundries”; the Rapido-C/E/T mixer/thermostat bodies and a selection of front plates are always available off the shelf and at prices very notably below the (UK: https://cdn.cloud.grohe.com/Literature/Brochures/en_CEE/GROHE_Pricelist_2018_EN_CEE/original/GROHE_Pricelist_2018_EN_CEE.pdf) retail price list. All their install manuals are verbose and multilingual, search for the part number on http://pro.grohe.com and you’ll find them. Second, one of the good things about Grohe is that their thermostats are well serviceable, and one can usually replace not just the front plate/controls but also valve and thermostat cartridges without having to break open the wall. Do keep in mind also a disadvantage: most Grohe fixtures want what the UK calls “high pressure”; 1 bar at least. Mains pressure will have that here, often just-about, but a gravity-fed system will definitely not. You’ll need a good combi boiler, or a megaflo-type mains pressure cylinder. Hello we are planning a bathroom renovation and I'm looking for some assistance with showers. We are based in the UK. we will be getting a shower over bath and the bath will be situated flat against the far wall of the room, so against 2 external walls and 1 internal wall. However only one of those external walls, at the typical tap end of the bath, can be used to fix a shower due to the location of a large window. We have a Combi Boiler but our flow rate isn't amazing; about 8.5 litres per min from the bath tap, and circa 7 litres per min from the shower head both at shower temperature. We currently have a bath/shower mixer. We would like to get the best possible shower experience we can within our flow rate limitations. We're not fussed about a thermostatic shower because only adults live in the house. From my research this seems to lead back to another bath/shower mixer. However if anyone has any alternative ideas then please let me know. in terms of brand we're thinking Grohe / Hansgrohe etc. Something good quality which will last. Also we're only looking for a hand shower. We won't be needing a rainfall overhead shower due to lack of ceiling height to be able to fix it at a decent enough height for my tall husband. Does anyone have any specific shower recommendations based upon our parameters or any other brands to recommend so that we can narrow our focus? We will also be having a glass bath screen and I'm thinking maybe Matki- although we're open to other suggestions. We want something which is good quality and easy to clean (i.e. not too many nooks and crannies to get dirty!). Because we're having a bath screen and due to the location of the vanity unit (i.e. relatively close to the edge of the bath) I'm concerned about the ease of reaching taps to turn on the shower to get the water to shower temperature before stepping in. Is there any way we can get a shower with the controls easily accessible? if this is something we want to investigate would our only option be a digital shower or are there other plumbing solutions? I agree that your bath won't be very useful without separate bath taps. New pipework for taps can be hidden under the bath to an extent. However, linking up to a hot and cold supply depends on where the current run of pipework is. You might find you can link up to the basin supply which may be at a similar height, so long as it is nearby or you can cover the new pipe run satisfactorily. If you are unsure, best to discuss with a plumber.

Because there are several baths available which are 1600 x 700mm, either double or single ended. Also, shorter than this if required - 1400 x 700mm and 1500 x 700mm. You will struggle to find one narrower than 700mm though. If you can accommodate a 700mm wide bath, check www.carronbathrooms.com for shorter length baths, with tap ledges.

Yes I agree! My builder brother said to go there and I do not regret it. The plumber needed more copper piping and he gave me the measurements and I went in and collected it, so he could carry on with my bathroom refit. Saved time and I felt very proud of myself! 😊👏
