Verbena question

I love this project, great work! Is that verbena bonariensis really 6' tall as it appears in this photo? and if so, do you know if that's just a feature of UK climate, or is that a special cultivar? I've only ever seen it about half that size here in Ohio, USA. thanks, - Reuben Huffman

Hi,

Thanks for the question, Verbena is normally quite tall here. Usually between 1.6 and 2m. It is standard Verbene bonariensis as you correctly identified. Unfortunately it doesn't always come back each year here though as the winter can be too cold.

It acted as a great semi-sheer screen in this garden.

As a keen gardener, (and a professional textile designer by trade) I have had to cope with similar problem of my own in the past, marrying the aesthetic with the practical and fairly easy to do in such a space with the same type of morning light. I read many books and talked to many gardeners and came to much the same conclusions as a earlier commentator above (Tom Flanagan). I would say his suggestions are excellent, he obviously knows what he is talking about. Low growing ground cover plants, won't give you any height (which you really need) and climbing plants won't give you any foliage or flowers in winter (they can look messy very quickly too), lavender and such like, fine is high summer, not so the rest of the year. No, I would go with his suggestions of of a few hebe, daphne, euonymus, viburnum davidii and skimmia. These will give height and all year round foliage, and provide the backbone of the border. You can then add a few extra perennials if you wish and most of all - bulbs, which are much under used in these situations, but absolutely brilliant! You can have ones that flower in spring, summer, autumn and even winter (the wonderful kaffir lily which comes in bright pink or red flowers from late autumn through winter, even in the snow). This means you have colour among the backbone of shrubs, providing year round interest. The great thing is, you don't need to do anything much with bulbs either, once you've planted them the first year. Good luck!

It depends what your into. I was chairman of an allotment and I obviously love veg. You can have both in front garden and they look great are easy to maintain and you get popular with the neighbours. You can fix this really easily and quite cheaply with a a bit of planning and digging. You need to widen your boarders. So many people are scared of making the boarders wiser but they make a big difference. Male curved on the edges and being the border out by 30cm at very minimum. Get some larger shrubs of shrubs that will get larger for the back of the boarder against the neighbouring fence. Space them well, it’s cheaper, will look neat and give it a year or two you’ll have quite a deep backdrop. I’d put the palm tile ones then further forward. Along the drove I would make a new boarders and add a rosemary hedge. Rosemary is fab and I’m always nipping out my garden to grab a handful. Also the top corner by the house of add a rhubarb. I became so popular with the neighbours! They even peak over to see if it’s nearly ready to start picking.

Was also going to say that is an impressive list. Much more than I can get hold of 🙂 and I agree that it depends on how much sun or shade the border gets. Which direction does the back of the house face? Had a good look through the list and a lot are seasonal bedding plants such as the lobelia, petunia, marigolds and so on which can still be useful to fill areas whilst the perennials settle in. I’ve compiled a shortlist of what I think could work well assuming it gets a fair amount of sun but even then in my experience choosing plants can be hit and miss. Some may take well while others may not. Primula and polyanthus might prefer a shadier position but it’s my experience that they’ll grow anywhere. Osteopermum, nice plant but better if you’re down south, mine died off in a sharp frost. Peony (slow growing). Risky but a nice plant if it takes well. Platycodon (Bellflowers or campanula), some can grow very tall but some are alpine variety so choose wisely. Lithodora, Cistus (silver pink), Aubretia, Lewisia, Saxifraga, Armeria Thrift, Arenaria, Arabis, Senetti are all rock/alpine plants I think and should do well in that border and won’t grow to high. They‘re quite often used in basket and container arrangements. The Cistus (or rock rose) is one of my favourite plants. Two others that struck my interest are Deutzia Rosea which looks like it stays compact and Andromeda. I’m assuming it’s Andromeda polifolia ‘compacta’ (bog rosemary). Looks lovely and one for my own list. 😊 If you want some taller shrubs/ plants do a little more research as there some good options there. Hope this helps. x

Hello, Looks like you have a very nice space there! Regarding your narrow border, I would suggest some pleached trees to go in there (such as in the picture below) . They are great to give you some height and do not occupy a lot of space at all. As Sonia said, you can attempt to amend your soil by digging some grit it, but the most straight forward solution in my view is to choose plants that tolerate the conditions of a heavy clay soil. Roses, some varieties of crab apples and the evergreen holy tree (which is easily found in the pleached format) are some ideas. Drip irrigation is a good idea, but heavy clay soils are very water retentive (usually puddling is a problem with this soil and not dryness). As Sonia said, newly planted plants do need more watering to stimulate the roots system to establish in the new location. The idea of putting a sofa do block children's access to the change of level in the patio is good as it will add to the cozy feel you are after. A wooden pergola on top of it as the ones that you suggested is a very good idea. You can also get retractable roofs to give you the possibility of shelter from the sun. Sonia's idea of planting scented climbers on the pergola is a very good one as well. Another idea is to add a brick edging around your patio to mark the edges and make the change of levels a bit more obvious and secure. Another idea for your gate are is to select plants that can grow through the gravel layer (provided that the gravel is not on top of concrete). As Sonia pointed out, potted plants do require much more watering than plants on the ground (once these are established). So this would be a good alternative.
