Sitting room - window and colour decisions
Comments (9)Thank you so much for your comments. You would not believe how helpful they are and they have really worked to 'unblock' my chaotic thinking. The sofas have arrived this morning - I had a very stressful time watching as the delivery guys had to do a bit of dismantling to get them through the doors. All safely installed now. One of them is perhaps a bit too big for the space really but we are looking at rearranging to make it work. The room does look a bit darker - not helped by the gloomy light this morning - but hopefully that can get sorted with the new decor when it happens. We have had a look at some options for a coffee table with drawers for my partner's 'bruck' (an old Scottish/Orcadian word for junk I think) and I think this might work out well. BTW today he has added eye-drops, selloptape, a battery charger and a pen-knife to the collection of things that need to be at his elbow! As for the flooring ideas. The rest of the ground floor is covered with Amtico, which I really like but I wanted the sitting room to have a cosier, slightly more luxurious feel to it so I am not keen to go for stripped boards or other hard flooring. I will have a good look at the 'naturals', though they do seem a bit 'scratchy' perhaps. I have attached (I hope) a photo of one of the sofas to show the colour. They are rather darker than AJ Interiors suggested in the photo. Any other suggestions for colour schemes/decor would be most welcome. The point that comes through the postings so far is the need to incorporate some natural elements to soften the potential harshness of the scheme so I will focus on this once I have got the fundamentals fixed in my mind. I shall have more questions later on as I am also doing stairs and landing - hope it's OK to pot again. Thanks once more to Minnie et al....See MoreSitting room colours/ curtain
Comments (24)Thank u all for the wonderful suggestions. You r all amazing& really helping me. This curtain choosing is tough but i have it down to 2- see attached.want a wow factor in the room and something that will last a long time So for pic 1 - thinking of curtains in the pink thistle both ends of the room with blinds in the light grey material either side of the fireplace trimmed with a pink, green border (border colours same as curtains)? Pic 2- all 3 small windows in blinds made with the large pink fabric. Curtains for the french doors in the plain grey material for the bottom 3/4 bordered with the larger pink trim on the top so it ties in with the blinds? We just repainted the room a few wks ago from a grey to thr cream that is on it so i dont think we have the time for a 3rd repaint...See MoreAdvice on sitting room paint colour and curtains please
Comments (5)First thing that makes the paper too busy is the stuffed room. So declutter. If nowhere else to put it, find a spacious cupboard/drawers. Paint it Yeabridge Green for example. Don't design around a sofa set you don't like. Find some pillows, rug and blankets that go well with the paper and floor. Make yourself a moodboard with curtains and such and then decide. Here are some F&B paint colors that could work well (I've tried them all, would not advise any other). Personally I like the first three on the left. But haven't seen your room (and taste), so no further suggestions.....See MoreColour scheme for a north facing 16'x16' sitting room in an early Edwa
Comments (6)Re-covering the sofas sounds a good idea although I would weigh up the cost of new as there are some bargains around. I can see you like navy/inky blues. What about doing one sofa in a blue velvet and the other in a light neutral colour (If the room can't handle 2 dark sofas). You can add different shades of lighter neutrals on the blue sofa and perhaps some colour on the other. I quite like the strawberry fields paper in ecru although all are nice. A modern take might be to paint the woodwork in a greige colour, something like farrow and ball skimming stone or elephants breath should work with that paper. Add a large mirror to bounce some light. I like the idea of adding metallics for interest, perhaps a brass/gold side table if you have a coffee table? I also agree re the wood as it adds so much warmth, would you consider laying karndean or amtico which Should give the same effect in the 2nd William Morris pic? To cosy the room up, I'd add a plant and flowers, a few pbooks, lamps (table and floor), rug and different textures for accessories and cushions and throws....See MoreFinn O'Mara
