How green is your property?
Comments (9)Not particularly. We have a woodburner and use our own wood so zero transportation costs. When we convert the garage we'll put in another wood burner. The house is also well insulated. Other than the normal energy saving lightbulbs it can be difficult. We looked into solar panels but get too much shade from tall trees. We heat using oil since we are not near a gas main and have considered converting to biomass heating given that we have a free wood supply but the storage area required is considerable. I have a solar charger arriving this week to power our iPads and phones. I'm not sure growing your own veg really makes much difference does it? If so we have fruit trees and masses of berries in the woodland. Unless you're Tom and Barbara its not going to make much of an environmental difference other than a few food miles but good for when the zombies come....See MoreHelp! House layout dilemma
Comments (11)Hi Jophilip I've been pondering this all evening and this morning! I think to maximise the space and light you have to move the services (utility, wc) to the left hand side of the house. I would change the current downstairs bathroom to a cloakroom for all your storage needs. I would block off the wall in the sitting room to make this a more formal space to escape to in the evening. I think you would need to get rid of the wall on the right hand side and incorporate that narrow space into the kitchen. Then you can get the light into the middle of the house with velux windows. I'm just not sure with moving all that plumbing and the wall it would come within budget. Hopefully a pro will give some input, apologies for the crude drawing!...See MoreFeatured properties & articles
Comments (1)I think that if I see one tiny corner of a huge house that makes my heart sing it can inspire ideas for a more modest property. I've always loved interior design books and more recently Houzz for that reason. I'm never likely to live in a home I've been able to have an architect design or an interior designer to work on but for over 40 years I've been inspired to use lots of what I see in my own homes. Improvise, improvise has always been a necessary motto! And be inspired to find your own style as time and circumstances allow and have fun doing it :-)...See MoreHelp with property exterior
Comments (14)Thanks for all your comments. Unfortunately the current doors are rotting so we need to replace them 😥 I prefer the look of painted wooden doors and am worried that a composite door colour just won’t have the same effect. I love the green sage colours that Sonia posted above but just can’t find something as striking yet muted in the ral/bs range for a composite door! I think silk grey and pebble grey against cream windows may not be enough of a contrast...but chartwell green may be abit too much - I’m hoping to find something in between 😊...See MoreJules Mc
