How can I install a downlight in the peak of my soffit?

I'm sure this must have been done a few times at least, but I can't find an example of where - let alone instructions on how they may have done it. Any help/insight on this is greatly appreciated.

Earlier today installed some downlights:

To the right of of that is a peak, and I'd like that quarter of the house to be lit too:

The (very) rough sketch I've added shows what I'm after - the same type of downlight to be installed vertically. The problem is that it comes to a point, it's a peak - how do I install that?

I've noticed some people choose to install the lights flat on the soffit either side instead and have them pointed inwards but I don't think that effect would work here.

Hi Daniel,

I agree the light should face down. I think I would build out a small section of the soffit and offset it from the front so that it doesn't affect the apex shape.

As above you will need to flatten of the underside of the Apex in order to get a downlighter in that space as it will not be possible to fit one flush due to the ridge in the roof being extended out to allow for depth of soffit you have. The hardest part will probably be getting a cable to it.

The first problem you have is that your downlights are floating in free air in the kitchen area - the beauty of sketch up! The rake of the ceiling will limit the choice of downlight if you wish to avoid glare. Also the recess depth will be an issue because of the insulation requirements and the need for the light fittings to breathe - contrary to popular belief, LED's create a lot of localised heat within the die (the bit that creates the light) that has to be moved away from it via a heatsink, in order to continue working for the long term. The heatsink dissipates the heat into a ceiling void when recessed - if you have insulation all over the heatsink, then it cannot do its job and your fittings will suffer early termination. You can choose a chandelier with a limited drop or a shape to suit the space you have available. Most importantly, think about your budget and the style. With LED decorative lights there are no bargains! Oh, and try to make sure you go for a dimmable fitting as most people buy a light from either a brightly lit shop or having never seen it lit, when installed it is either too bright to be used for it's intended purpose or it is too dull. Personally, I would recommend a rectangular pendant over your dining table and matching family style circular one over the breakfast bar. Hi, I would think it probably is a requirement to have access to the flue for sweeping etc - however your set up looks a bit odd!! In my burner, the flue is accessed through the burner itself, so we don’t have any access from the flue pipe, so no hole. My brothers burner does have access - however it’s a very neat door. Just google woodburner flue pipe access doors and you will see examples - usually it’s a small circular door in either black or a contrasting chrome. You might have to buy a new bit of pipe with a door - but it’s relatively cheap in the scale of fitting the burner. The one that you have looks functional but it also looks a bit rough and “homemade”. If I had to have an access door, I would want to choose what it looks like!

Well as you can imagine, work stopped a few weeks ago. I've managed to get some supplies delivered so I'm doing the DIY bits. I'm currently boarding out the dining room ceiling to slightly lower it and to install downlights. The wiring and boarding should be done well before my builder us allowed back. Then I have to source the kitchen all over again!

I agree with OWL the wall light is unnecessary- in its place put an extra downward spotlight. Since you are adding lights I would add some additional lights at the side. Separately I think you will find these types of light are not intrusive because they face downwards and are low voltage- instead I think they make houses look welcoming

Thanks for the replies, both! Really appreciate it!

The cable is the easiest part, that's done. Not sure how to build or secure that little frame to house the light, that's tricky for me (I'm not a carpenter!) but sure I'll work it out.

I was actually considering a spotlight (not a downlight like the others) on the front of the fascia instead that can rotate back on itself. So couple of options to work with now.
