Mixing Whites - Paint and Standard White Tubs, etc.

If cabinets/trim/doors are painted throughout the home in BM White Dove would it mix okay with the cleaner, brighter whites that are in the standard white bathtubs, sinks, bright white tiled tub/shower surround? Also, does the BM White Dove work okay with the whiter marbles (not the grayer carrara)?

It is always a problem to match the white of tile and appliances with cabinets and walls. But after all is in it isn't noticeable. Even matte finish reflects light differently than satin finish. Your perception will adjust.

We, personally prefer to add a bit of contrast as all white might look a bit too clinical

You should always do a watered down mist coat on new plaster. We used the dulux trade matte diamond paint from a dulux mixing centre. Whilst it is brilliant for being able to wipe stuff off it I would say it had more of a sheen to it then I wanted so wouldn't recommend for ceilings. We used the trade dulux supermatte and that really lived up to its reputation, covers well and looks completely flat but won't wipe off so well but given its cheap and effective you can just touch up where needed.

We used white cotton in our north facing room which is lovely and light but not as strong as brilliant white. Skimming stone and cornforth white are also lovely shades but a bit more to them than just a standard white. We always paint a tester in the room we're going to decorate, as its amazing how a grey can look like it has hints of lilac in a different light. Also allows you to check it doesn't clash with the flooring colour (a friend of mine recently had decorators in only to realise after the walls didn't compliment the carpet). Thanks again everyone! I agree that I wasn't sure if the warm wood tones would work well with a dark floor but stumac23 your family room looks great!! I think it looks like a surprisingly good combo! I still think white would look good too but it may be best to leave the bay window frame alone. Unsure. I guess I'll see what it's like once the walls and floor are done

Hello Dee B, Whites can be wonderful and I rarely use Dulux but I do like their Jasmine white, it is warm and has a nice bright finish without being boring, slightly veering toward a creamy colour. Brilliant White I would not use ever whether the room has full sun or not. I think it leaves a cold starkness which white does not have to be about at all. My other favourites are of course The Little Greene Paint Company and they have a whole range of whites and shades thereof. Or neutrals. Whitening is also a lovely warm white, slaked lime which is slightly cooler and I tend to use shades in variations so it is not a complete paint in one colour alone scenario which I do find sensationally boring. Think of architectural features you want to pick out. You also want really chalky finishes which are deep and provide depth. LG provides that and their paints are wonderful. Personally I have and have used extensively the shades I mention in various sizes of rooms and in my living room which gets so much sun in summer and winter that I have to wear sunglasses. You can clearly see the differences between shades when you compare them throughout the day. The other thing of course is that you can be imaginative about your use of colour, so you permeate the palette throughout. Some testers on plain paper should help you decide what you like. Shades with some warm woods, ochre's, apricots or flooring such as blonde woods would compliment. Rugs and other natural woven materials, such as Coir, Jute or Sisal compliment and notice how the architectural details are picked out. The room is bright and very light but not all white. Then you can accent and punctuate with beautiful pieces to layer the room. AJ

No one paints trim the pure bathtub white, it would be way too stark, so we paint our doors and trim with something else and live with the bright white tubs and toilets. Paint the walls a color and it will all come together beautifully.

@Jennifer Hogan Would SW Extra White be considered as stark white as a bathtub white? Would BM White Dove look dirty next to a bathtub white?

nancy, I used White dove on my walls and trim when painting my room. I found it looked dingy. so I completely repainted using Simply White. (which would be close to Pure White). It had a much crisper appearance without being too stark.

I also used the white straight out of the can (no added tint to it BM Advance, Base 1 semi gloss) for all the trim around my marble bathroom. you can see it here on the door and baseboard

You don't HAVE to add tint to the white base. Is this too stark? if so, then try a warmer neutral like Simply White

White Dove would look a little dingy next to a white bathtub.

Why don't you just get some samples and see for yourself??

I wouldn't use White Dove in my home. I like a cleaner white, but I also use some stronger color than other people use.

My absolute favorite white is one that can be matched by Benjamin Moore, It is Devine Color Icing. Sherwin Williams bought out the Devine Color line and won't color match. It is very close to BM Cotton Balls.

That said, the best way to pick colors for your home is to start with the colors you love. Pick colors that make your heart sing when you see them. Pick colors that make you feel like a 10 when you wear them. You want your home to make you feel joy when you walk into each room. I usually pick 3 "Colors" for my home and then pick lighter and darker, brighter and grayer shades of the colors. I use some color in each room.

Second step is to pick how you are going to use those colors in each room. Will they be the main wall color or an accent color or the color of the sofa or chairs? Which rooms will have more of one color and which will have more of another. How do the colors flow from one room to the next.

After I decide on the "Colors" I pick a neutral that works with the colors. For me this is usually a taupe, but that is because I love smokey purples and teals and deep wine reds. For you this may be gray or beige or taupe or greige. The neutral has to work with the colors.

The last color decision is white. Which white works best with the colors and the neutrals.

Extra White is a blue white and would not look good next to my taupe. Chantilly Lace is a very neutral white and works with most colors as does the Devine Icing.

If I were painting all the walls in my home Dove Wing and wanted a very monochromatic color scheme I would pick White Dove as the trim white, but that is really not my style. I am really not that sophisticated and even if I were I would probably pick something more like SW Creamy and SW Pure White if I were going for the white on white monochromatic look.

Hint - look in your closet, look at the things that you have bought for in your home that you absolutely love - art, vases, candles. Look at your jewelry, scarves, accessories. We generally buy things that bring us joy and make us feel happy, so it is a great place to start.
